Title: Spring Motor Drive unit

Hi chaps,

I am trying to design a motor to drive a spring. The spring is connected to a ~10kg load that moves up and down.

The purpose of this motor is to start and sustain the oscillation of the load.

How do I go about designing this motor ? The challenge here is not to ensure stability and not to overdrive the oscillation pass resonance.

I am thinking I need a PWM generator and some form of feedback to detect "over-drive".

Any ideas anyone ?

Would a cam do?  Put a cam on the motor shaft that will push against a plate that the spring is attached to, moving it up and down.  PWM to control the motor.  I assume you want to drive the spring AT the resonant frequency, which could be as simple as figuring out what that frequency is then driving the motor at that RPM, or more complex using a linear encoder on the spring to determine how it's moving, and control that way.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mike,

I posted this on another section of this forum ... the mechanical section rather than electronics and it is more mechanical than electronic.

The cam idea might work ... will need some refinement.
