Robotics PHd Program

What is the typical requirements/path to follow to gain admittance into  robotics PHd program?

I am not sure how it is world wide but in the U.S. mostly what I have seen is that robotics is usually tied into Computer Science or Computer Engineering degrees like a specialisation.  Like AI, computer learning, etc.
Failure is just another excuse to keep playing with your robot.

In Portugal it could be done with CS/CE or Electrical Engineering. In my university (IST-Lisbon)there is a dual phd program with Carnegie Mellon on robotics for Electrical Engineering Masters, with a specialization on Robotics (Sadly, CS/CE doesn´t ).

At some universities the department and degree it gets pulled into can depend on the individual professor or director that started it because they had the experience to do so or what department they tagged it to for budget and facilities and faculty.
