I would offer an opinion...
My first response, is one in which I used in a scanner.(confusing?)
Sounds like you need a
squelch circuit, to activate a cutoff switch.
A delay could be put in, with the threshold of the level of the audio
controlled too, to
avoid level overshoot.Now, for compactness, the circuit may be avaliable in SMT format,
which reduces the size to a transistor. Soldering will be tricky, as heat
in these devices can destroy them quickly. The squelch circuits, used in
scanners,
detect audio, (
blocking capacitor for DC) and thus, your dual
problem is solved.
This activation can be used as feedback, to navigate other problems, if any.
