Are any special ICs or wiring setups required to configure a board to be programmed through a USB connection?
I'm hoping to eliminate the serial connection from the board I'm designing...

Look at the FT-232 chip, from FTDI. That's what I use in some of my work.
You can also get breakout boards from Sparkfun that have a USB -> TTL chip:

u can use usbasp,its very easy, and can program pretty well.
see the usbasp site....google it

Yes, usbasp is very easy, u can definitely go for it. No special ic's. Just an atmega8 or 48.
