Title: car batteries and wheelchair motors
Post by: xboogerx on May 16, 2008, 09:17:42 AM
I've got two wheelchair motors rated at 10.5 amp each and need 24v to make them go vroom. Can I wire up two car batteries in parallel, put two 30amp fuses before each motor and make them work for a test run? or am I risking that I might ruin the motors?

I really want to be able to use these car batteries, I know that they aren't the best to get the job done. but I really don't have the money now to go get the right kind of batteries.
Thanks

You have to put the batteries in series(because you get 24V which is the correct voltage) not in parallel(because you get 12V). Assuming that those motors work like dc motors I dont think you gonna have any issue using the batteries.

There are two problems with car batteries...

1. Since they're not sealed, they can leak acid if you tip them over too much.

2. They can leak toxic gas when operating, so you shouldn't use them indoors.

Wheelchairs typically use gel cell (deep cycle) batteries.

OK, you know of a cheap supplier?

I'm Canadian... I got one at the local Canadian Tire. You can get a 12V deep cycle battery for less than $100.

xboogerx, what motors do you use? any chance of any schematics or links to the saler?

Im in the need for a good motor as well, but since i dont live in USA, i cant buy from Ebay (most dont ship outside USA)
