win $200 for your robot, SoR Contest
« on: May 04, 2007, 05:38:56 PM »
Ok the robot building contest is now official:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/free_robot_contest.shtml

I decided to raise the prize amount to $200 (yes, from my own pocket).

For those who have made the $50 robot and worry it just can't compete with other robots, no one is stopping you from upgrading it with new sensors (sonar, IR, etc.), or extra servos, or perhaps even an arm. You have four months of summer to work on it ;D

if you have any comments, read this post first:

$200 sounds enticing, but have no digi cam, and no way to program it.  :'(  But it's ok

Does the competition have some sort of formalities like filling a form or is it just posting the tutorial?

Admin, is it okey if I use your Photovore Source Code as a main structure for code?
or is that a violation to the international (by that i mean SoR) robotic contest rules?

You can use everything that I post on this site - just make sure you give credit to where it belongs, link back, etc.
Also note that if you add new features to the code, and explain it well in your tutorial for others to use, thats extra bonus points from me ;D

I will be coming out with some new better code for the $50 within the next few weeks, so check back next month for updates.

People from India can fully participate in the competition. Just be aware that any check I write will be in US dollars.

For now I will only ban two types of countries:
  • 3rd world nations
  • Nations deemed by the US government as supporters of terrorism

The reason is because Im afraid of inadvertently getting myself arrested for 'funding a terrorist organization' :-\
Sorry!

If by small chance you think you fall into either category, please send me a private message to verify.

Hey Admin I have a question... for the "space" you are going to be giving us to write our tutorial, is it like a blank web domain and we have to do all the HTML stuff, or is it like a space where you can upload pics and videos and text. Sorry for the lack of terminology- you can probably tell that I have absolutely no clue where to even begin making a web page, or how it is even done (ignorance on my part, to me the Internet pages magically appear on my screen  ???)
Hell, there are no rules here—we're
   trying to accomplish something.

Fear not, as its all done for you :P:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/member_tutorials/

There are several ways to use it. No html knowledge required, although you can use it if you want.

You could even design your webpage in MS Word and literally copy/paste it into a page.

To get access, just send a request (private message) for an account and you will get an email about how to set it all up.

One reason why I am doing this contest is to kick-start the member tutorials page. ;D

You may enter in as many as you like. But I want to remind you that one really good tutorial has a better chance of winning than two medium quality tutorials.

If the winner has a bank account, I can (and rather) do a direct transfer.

Hey admin,

are the winners from last contest automatically entered in this contest? Or are you automatically disqualified from entering the same tutorial twice if you won?

Wow nice, there are already 10 contestants. That's already a bunch more than last contest,
I'd love to join to, but I'm in the middle of exams, and I'll be done in three weeks. So I can only continue my robot then :/

It's good to see SoR growing and growing... :)
