Title: Ranking up
Post by: E.Man.Lava on January 19, 2008, 10:29:54 PM
how many posts do you need to rank up?

P.S. This probably seems like a dumb question but i've been wondering about it and i can't find the answer anywhere.  It is starting to bug me  :D

umm why does it matter    ???

the ranks mean squat!

there are some people here who have over 100 posts and are major newbies  , while others have less than 10 posts and are experts in the field.

As you post replies to topics, people will see how "smart" you are at robotics or at programming ,etc.
Then as you post more and more , people will be able to tell if they can rely on you for correct answers to their problems.

you just have a tendency to stretch the truth a bit

XD lol we dont want everybody asking that question anyway because that generally means they want to rank up then they'll keep posting spam until they do.

i don't think it's postes that rank you up

i think it is the amount of time you spend logged on

Having people focusing too much on rank is bad for the community and makes it drown in poorly written, short posts that doesn't have any real value in it.

@ed, lol I knew someone was going to post that!

Also it seems like this question is asked a lot on forums, I think some people think rank is like a social standing on the internet, but its like airman said
there are some people here who have over 100 posts and are major newbies  , while others have less than 10 posts and are experts in the field.

I are is nolejable(sound it out :P!) If you does konnect bloo wyre to red wyre, yoo getz some smoke. That are sometymes bad!

But seriously. Post counts count for nothing... except the amount of posts you have :P Dont worry about "ranking up" because in all truth, the quantity of your posts has absolutely nothing to do with your actual and practical rank amongst the other members. If you have 5,000 posts but all of them are "lol that is kewl!" but then another guy has 3 posts that are very in depth and offer great solutions to someone problems, the guy with 3 posts is going to have a WAY higher practical rank.

... just solidifying what was already said...

I have 560 posts and havnt finished building the chassis to my $50 robot... it works though lol :)

I know a decent amount of theory though... so perhaps im not a COMPLETE waste of forum space :P

lol Maverick.

@Lava
search the forums for the problems you are having. Chances are, the solution is sitting there somewhere waiting for you to happen upon it. If after spending some time searching you dont get your answer, start a new topic with your errors, problems, and questions.

I change the required level up count occasionally.

When I give you green robots, that means I think you really know your stuff. If you get gold robots, that means you won the SoR contest. I do both of these manually. ;D

there should be a different color robot , like have polls every 3 months or so , voting for most helpful , etc.  ( though admin would win.. , lol )

i have almost 1k posts and was one of teh first people to build the $50 robot. sadly it don't work and I'm still a noob  :-[
Title: Re: Ranking up

Going from noob to intermediate requires lots of work . . . I spend like 8 hours/day working on robots, and I've been doing that since 2002 (when I was a noob) . . . And I didn't have SoR for help when I was a noob! :P

There are quite a few of you that started off as uber noobs but I can tell you've definitely learned a lot since joining SoR. Don't think I haven't noticed. Ed, you are one of them ;D
Keep up the good work! :)

Perhaps in 4 or 5 years many of you guys will be starting your own robotics companies . . . and I hope you all will remember me with stock options ;)

Robootics huh? Sounds interesting :P

I too have started a small business, Dragonware Systems, that I mostly use to order parts and samples and also put in the copyrights for the Java and C++ programs that I write.

There should be like medals, like robots. For example a special medal for successfully building the $50 robot.

hahaha yeah have the models display under your contact details under your avatar :P

The clutter would get insane :P
Title: Re: Ranking up

The problem with medals would be that anyone could just say that they did something like build the 50$ robot and give themselves a medal without actually doing anything.  They should have to be able to prove that they did what they claim they did.  Maybe they could post videos of their 50$ robot for example and Admin could give them medals manually (if he felt like it, LOL).
Title: Re: Ranking up
Post by: airman00 on January 21, 2008, 04:49:28 PM
ehhh too much work

besides if someone wants to make an award page for societyofrobots he could do so , admin has enough work on his hands

also the medals would mean nothing , someone could build the 50 dolalr robot and get a medal and people will think he is very smart and then someone else could make ASIMO and get no medal.

If you want an award page, make it yourself and post the link in the forum somewhere.

That makes sense, now to do something cool enough (like actually getting one of my robots to function, lol) to make a system to give myself medals for it.  Maybe i could just give myself medals for reasons that im awesome, but id probably get chronic carpal tunnel by the time i finished the list of medals i deserve (lol).  But you're right, it would be a boatload of work to manually give people medals every time they do something cool.

why does every body care about this so much? After all this forum is to learn about robots not to impress people by how much you know, well maybe a little bit :P  ;D . Not trying to be mean but i'm just making a point.

maby an ubernoob of the month award???? "pick me, pick meeeeeeee"

Like the medals idea, but I failed the 50$ robot... only due to lack of funds and my repeatedly screwing up of pc boards... lol

if there was an UberNoob of the month award i would so totaly win, the first time i tried the 50$ robot it got caught on fire!  :-[  :D

I know what you mean by screwing up pc boards.  My first one was so bad that the photoresistors wouldnt even stay on the board, they kept falling off!  ;D
