blackfin camera base expansion question

Hi:
Can anybody tell me if the SRV-1 Base Expansion Module for the blackfin camera used in the
Axon tutorial is really necessary? the tutorial says:
"The main purpose of the green board is to provide the 3.3V supply and give you screw holes for mounting"
Could I just use a 3.3 power regulator and not spend the 40$ on it?
