Community Project: The Name
« on: April 27, 2009, 11:32:11 AM »
Ok I was not able to sleep at all last night so I was thinking a lot and realized it might be nice to have a good name for this standard/project. It would at least make it so I didn't keep having to type community project all the time. So I just thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone had and good ideas. I;m not sure how good it is but my first idea was O.S.C.A.R. The Open Source Community Amateur Robotics standard.

Any other Ideas?

I think that SoR should be mentioned. Hmm maybe the name isn't the place to do it, but jeez this site needs credit definitely! The creators owe the majority of their knowledge to it...

Can't think of anything yet, but ill ponder :)

As far as mentioning SOR. The entire standard will LIVE here. You want information on it you have to come here to get it. The name doesn't need to include SOR because it is our standard and if someone spoofs the info onto their site without mentioning us then we chase them down and get them to at least credit us.

what about if on each board we had the creators name and SoR's web address?

well I guess with lots of modules you can make a robot ;D (there will be a servo controller mod right?)

also my vote is in for oscar. too bad we cant make a poll.

yes, im pretty sure there will be a servo controller module, hopefully anyway...
and we don't really need a poll do we, there isnt many people involved with this anyway...

+1 For OSCAR, as it is less bland than ComPro, like the WERPS I will be building soon (Web Enabled Remote Power Switcher)

I think to warrant such a big change, we would need to at least have a good few modules in the process of being made. We had a community project idea before that quickly evaporated into nothing.

What we need now is people to start working. Im pretty sure that even the beginner members who are interested in contributing can make a single servo module or a single sensor module.

Get working guys! Oh... and make sure you design it all before building. It's a good habit to get into and the platform-wide standards aren't yet confirmed.

In the first iteration of this endeavor. Admin said that he would make a section when the project grew to enough size to warrant it. We are off to a better start this time then last time so keep at it guys and lets get a few modules into prototype stages and we can get this to take off.

step one: design the board in eagle.
step two: check design for floors.
step three: etch a board or two.
step four: buy components and solder down.
step five: test board.
that's pretty much it. it helps tonnes if you have an understanding of what the main chip does and have its pinout somewhere for reference.

There is a lot of software design to do aswell in order to make these modules as uniform and organised as possible. A detailed guide will be made soon on how you should structure the communication part of your code.

Also, rinse and repeat what smash said. Development is an incremental process.

Keep in mind the programming can change over time easily. Hardware design is REALLY important. You have to design the hardware to last and to work great. Its harder and more expensive to change hardware later. Posting a hardware design thats not perfect is not great but it will be ok. The problem comes when you try to sell it. I would not buy a module that was not rock solid in the hardware.

Hmm, you're pushing it calling a software change 'easy' :P

Sometimes  you might need a complete rewrite if the initial design wasn't up to scratch.
