making an rc car

I have only recently started doing electronics but I would like to make a radio control car which can go forwards, backwards, left and right but i don't know if there is any specific software i should use and what types of servos i should use. Also if anyone could give me a circuit design which i could follow that would be very helpful.

using car type (ackerman) steering or tank (diferential) steering?

if using a remote (transmitter), and a receiver made for rc cars, you won't need any software.
also the servos will plug into the receiver, but will have limited motion, unless you mod them.

my advice- get the transmitter, receiver, and ESC (electronic speed controller) and a motor.

if using ackerman steering also get a servo.

if using tank like, get 2 ESC and 2 motors

if you want a rc car it would be the same price to buy a nice hobby grade rc car as it is to buy all the electronics seperatly and try to build your own chassis, also, hobby rc cars have alot of work put into them in the way of steering and suspension geometry.

small 18th scale ( <1 foot long) rc truck, great first truck, fairly fast, if you want somthing more specific i can help. if you insist on building from scratch, it might be best to start with a 2wd stadium truck so you can use the gearbox/differential from it and build a chassis to go around it

How much would you expect this to cost becasue i don't have a huge budget

50 for the transmiter and reciever if you cheap out.. go to rc forums and ebay to find used speed controles, just make sure you get 2 of the same.

Of course you can make an esc yourself... look for esc schematics should you fing pleanty!!!
