Sync a Machine Vision Camera with a robot's joint
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:27:21 AM »
Hi,

I'm new to this forum, so I apologize if the topic is too obvious (it's not for mee  ???)
I'm not experienced with real robots, although I've been teaching robotics theory for a while. I'm also familiar with machine vision systems, especially 3D laser scanners.
The task I am about to do is to use a robot's angular joint (actually a Stäubli TX60), preferrably one of the three minor axis to hold a camera + laser system (or scanning head). I need to trigger the camera with the robot joint's encoder pulses to make sure the camera grabs images every known angle step.
Whereas this seems to be a simple task for encoder-equipped conveyor belt systems or linear stages, when it comes to use standard robots for angular scanning I can't find any information, neither at robot manufacturer's sites.
Is there anybody in the forum familiar with this ? are there special hardware expansion boards or similar that should be used to actually isolate the encoder wires from being directly connected to the camera triggering input ? Regardless of the robot brand I would really appreciate any help !!

Thanks for this forum. It's a very good source of inspiration  ;D
