Shigeo Hirose built one.  He's probably one of the greatest robot builders ever.

a humanoid on roller skates would be a massive step for robotics...
a humanoid on its on is enough of a feat... and to add roller skates to the equation spells disaster...

actually, i think a humanoid on roller skates would be easier than a walking humanoid.

Think about it, the problem with people on roller skates is they flail and lose balance, a robot wouldn't flail.
there is less balancing involved in roller skating, assuming of course you planned on keeping both feet on the ground at the same time, moving in what is called a swizzle.

If you wanted to build a bot that took true strides (and lifted the skates off the ground) then it would be hard.

I know there is a small japanese humanoid bot that does what wil hamilton says, has little wheel attachments and kind of scurries on the ground.

but that wont be of great advantage
u may just as well attach a few moters or wadevr to the wheels and they will be going well and good.

the advantage is when a bot skates like a pro in speed
such a bot if made in rc can easily rule in battle b
and trust me, i have seen youngsters swivvle at my school...............pathetically slow
even a running person can overtake the
anyway ill be building the $50 bot for a few months coz i have my board exams this yr(gaurav u know wad i am taliking abt)

There is one article about  humanoid robot which uses rollers.

I'm also interested in some information about roller robots, if someone have it, pls share it here.

i am under cbse board
also the real prob is not time management for me
actually as u know if i wanna build the $50 robot i need Rs2500($50 = Rs 2500duh!!!)
but my parents are not willing to buy parts for me

i have told them loads of times tha ti wanna take robotics as a career but they are going all abt there's no scope in india and prompting towards me sliding into stereotypical engineering........the one which everybody takes

i dont know wad to do

thankfully i get the money some how but as my exams are approaching they r just forcing me to give up robotics as it has no scope in India and it is very costly . my parents can't understand that robotics is gr8 fun .
well abhinav i live in mumbai and there is a company called as TRIINDIA which is started by iit mumbai alumnus and they held a competition every year and u can  get loads of money if u win and there u can meet a lot of enthusiasts and it is jus awesome .last year i came third and won 12500 rupees (250$) which is the funding i get .u can log into there website www.triindia.co.in  (gr8 website).well i hope ur parents get to know ur enthusiasm in robotics and i m sure u will somehow get the money ;D ;D

the $50 robot would be a great starting point, if you can find the electronics cheaply then you should be set, you should be able to find servos somewhere like ebay that ships international.

i m made the robot according to the problem statement given by the ppl .it was the same as the robocup rescue2007 junior category problem statement .i will give the links after little search and the pics too ;D

it will be gr8 if u buy the the 50$ bot components and later use arduino boards bcoz i jus saw arduino.cc and it's so much opensourced that u can get to know everything and it's applications jus from the internet

best of luck .

if it wasnt a humanoid you could use servos to push sticks on the ground to push the skates around
