single vision camera with LADAR for 3D images
« on: April 20, 2008, 09:33:34 PM »
This is a google talk showing a neat new possible robot camera.

Basically it uses an arrayed chip and a laser with a high speed clock to get 128x128 range data, and then combines each pixel with the pixels on a normal color camera to create neat 3D images.

Unlike other LADAR technologies, it allows for instant highspeed 3D images without moving parts. Oh, and iRobot recently bought this company . . .

The talk is 60 minutes, but its worth watching.

Impressive technology, though you won't be buying one of those cameras from SparkFun any time soon. The range gating is particularly interesting.

Here is a similar camera that is coming out sometime this year.  3DV Systems expects the camera to cost around $100.
