Title: Need to find right hubs for windshield wiper motors!
Post by: SeagullOne on April 22, 2008, 01:13:18 PM
Has anybody ever worked with windshield wiper motors before? I acquired two identical ones for my project but can't seem to find the right hubs for them ???. I'm looking for something thats DD, and in a little less that half an inch wide (I measured the shafts). Does anyone out there know how I might find something like that. I've browsed Google all over. Thanks in advance!

when / if  you find hubs please post em up. Thats one of the reasons I didn't buy windshield wiper motors. Now if  you have a CNC machine and can make custom hubs ............

Also , where did you buy the motors from.

I bought them both for $20.00 all together from a local auto junk dealer. I do know that some battle bot builders use them...but I wonder how they get the hubs/or how they make them.

Airman, I have a friend whose father has tons of tools for construction...I'll have to ask if he has a CNC machine.

ed1380, those hubs just might work...if they're still not too big (5/8").

I've also emailed AndyMark Inc. to see if they can custom design the hubs I need. I have yet to hear from them though...

Okay, I have a plan!

The ends of the windshield wiper motors are DD 1/2" x 1/4". What I do is I take a really thick or strong piece of metal in flat stock form, such as steel or thick aluminum. I take a 1/4" drillbit and carefully drill two holes directly next to each other. I file away the sharp edges and the result is a DD bore the right size I need it! I drill a couple holes of the ends of the flat stock steel or aluminum, and I've got a hub I can mount to my wheels!

What do you guys think?

make sure that its perfectly perpendicular to the metal

Of course! ;D That's why I have a drill press. 8)

Hubs are really easy to make - you dont need a CNC!

A bandsaw, mill, and/or drill press combination can do it.
