sensors for obstacle avoidance

hi!


i am a 2nd yr student of electronics engg.

i am presently designing an obstacle avoidance robot,can anybody tell me
what are the diff sensors available & which is a better option.

also i need to know the no of sensors and the orientation of them for
proper working.

hii.. i m also a final yr engg student and v also have obstacle detection as a part of our final yr project.
v hv used ultrasonic sensors 4 da same... nd i guess dats a better option rather than IR.. V hv used 40Khz ultrasonic TX-RX pairs which r excited by a 40Khz square waves... theses r easily available..
