555 and 556 timers

I was wondering if there is a difference between the 555 timers and the 556 timer on these pages and weather or not they will function like normal a normal timer IC

ah yes, allelectronics... my favorite supplier...
anyway, the 556 timer is a pair of 555s in one case, with a shared set of +Vcc and Gnd pins. You can use only one of the 555 timers in the 556, but it's a bit of a waste to buy it if you only need one timer.

at digikey I paid the same for regular 555's, so not much of a waste of money
