Title: Sound insulation
Post by: llt on March 02, 2008, 10:01:47 PM
Would waterproofing a servo with mineral oil also help make it less noisy?

not sure if you have read this
http://www.societyofrobots.com/actuators_waterproof_servo.shtml (http://www.societyofrobots.com/actuators_waterproof_servo.shtml)

but the ultimate method for waterproofing calls for mineral oil injection, and I think its not really for noises reduction but for the actual water proofing .

some people put their computers in mineral oil and i've heard it's dead silent.

i think its cause there is no air turbulence inside  but doing so eats away at the plastic on the caps

about the servo
it might make it quieter because it's in oil. or make it louder cause oil is denser then air and transmits sounds better

and of course, there would need to be some other cooling system involved since the oil would gradually get hotter and hotter

.lol trumpkin

the reason its dead silence is because it is water cooled instead of fan cooled, there is no fan in the mineral oil computer !

yes there is. it's just slow.

why would they need a fan?

...just to look good :)

...but the fan died and even when it was going it was probably using more power than intended because of the added resistance of the oil.

to make a long story short, putting mineral oil in servos probably doesn't make it a lot quieter.

exactly

mineral oil is used because it has very low conductance ( if any)

The mineral oil didn't make it noticeably quieter.

The noise results from the gears meshing. Buy some $6 servo grease and grease up all the gears. That'll help.
