Does anybody know of a standard size led that is brightest around? I'm trying to make a welding simulation bot and i thought if I got two blue LEDs to stay one during the weld time and one red one to flicker it might look like its welding.
Any ideas were to buy some ultra bright LEDs?
Oh, and I do have a 9.6vdc 1000mAh battery to supply it.

they're a bit expensive, but they'll leave spots on your eyes for days.
for a cheap source look at microchip.com, you'll get 5 of them soldered onto a board
the boost board gives out 40v to provide enough voltage for the 5 LED's in series, it runs off of 9v. they're a blueish white, like the xenon headlights.
i think it's the 1630 boost board comes with it.

Can't you power up a flyback transformer from a tv and make that arc? :P It will look better. Plus, it will also make the sound of arcing and the smell of ozone.

get a car coil out of a wrecking yard you can get 20,000 volts out of one.... or a plasm generator kit from Ramsey, puts out 25,000 volts

ozone is poisonous, but we're starting a revolution in robotics that could one day lead to skynet.

[ozone] :D I like that idea :) Can whatever the arc emits set off a smoke detector? If so, that can be a problem being it running in school :P

What about a car spark plug for a electrode? I'm looking for a smaller sparking thing. Preferably something that i can't get fried on :D

if you use one car coil.... and 12 volts you only get a 1/2" spark. more volts = more spark and you can use any kind of electrode, If you don't want to use a spark plug.

This is possibly TOTALLY unrelated to the topic haha...
...but I had an idea from it. Your robot has an arm that sticks out. This arm has a wire running into a box. This box is full of plastic and metal random items. The box is constantly being turned. The triboelectic effect begins to mount on the edge of your robots arm until it touches a "victim".
ZAP!!!
..to make this on-topic, I'd suggest the LED option to simulate. Then turn around and TOUCH the victim with a triboelectric charge :D

also you need to isolate the coil from everything. 20,000 volts will kill a controller. if the coil has the slightest crack it will arc back to ground or your hand.....won't kill you...no amps...but the shock is numbing...trust me...

That's mainly what i was afraid then i heard that idea :P. Yesterday I installed one really bright blue LED on the arms welding nozzle and then put an array of 8 more bright LEDs behind the piece that it will simulate a weld on. I looks really great in the dark too:) and it suffice for now.

you can buy one kit and wire to both arms....

Just get a bunch of 4000mcd ultra bright LEDs from mouser.com.
Wire a few in parallel, with a 150ohm resistor on each on.

i bought several 7000 mcd LEDs from Jameco. i dont think you can find bright blue LEDs, but i'm using green.

anyone know about how bright a 25000mcd led is?
