Title: Camera Project
Post by: Evan on January 23, 2010, 11:31:05 PM
Hello all. I'm currently working on a project, and since I'm relatively new to this, I was
hoping to run it by a few people to see if they thought any part of the design could be
optimized/swapped out for a better alternative or if they thought a part of it wouldn't work. Generally, all I plan to do with this design is have a simple base, with a camera on top that can pan/tilt (which would connect to a nearby computer wirelessly). Here it goes:

Microcontroller: Arduino Duemilanove (www.arduino.cc (http://www.arduino.cc)) takes 7-12V, outputs 5V (~40mA)

Two Motors for basic movement: Solarbotics GM9 (www.robotshop.us/solarbotics-gm9-gear-motor-9-1.html (http://www.robotshop.us/solarbotics-gm9-gear-motor-9-1.html)) 5V DC (~700mA at stall)

Two Servos for pan/tilt of camera: Hitec HS-422 (www.robotshop.us/hitec-hs422-servo-motor.html (http://www.robotshop.us/hitec-hs422-servo-motor.html)) 4.8-6V (~150mA when no load is running)

One Wireless Camera for vision: D-Link DCS-920 (www.dlink.com/products/?pid=664 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=664)) 5V DC (2.5A)

One Motor Controller to control the two motors: Pololu Qik 2s9v1 Dual Serial Motor Controller
(http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1110 (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1110)) 4.5-13.5V motor supply, 1A continuous current (3A peak), 2.7V to 5.5V logic supply range.

One Servo Controller to control the two servos: Micro Maestro 6-channel USB Servo Controller
(http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1350 (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1350)) powered from 5-16V, makes 5V available to user

One Wifi Component to have arduino communicate with PC: WiShield for Arduino 1.0
(http://asynclabs.com/store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=17&cate
gory_id=6&vmcchk=1 (http://asynclabs.com/store?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=17&cate
gory_id=6&vmcchk=1))

and finally: Two 7.2V 3000mAh Flat NiMH High Power Battery Packs with Tamiya Connectors and Smart Universal Charger for NiMH / NiCd Battery pack 7.2V - 12V 1.8A
(http://www.all-battery.com/2x72v3000mahnimhbatterypackswithchargercombo91096.aspx (http://www.all-battery.com/2x72v3000mahnimhbatterypackswithchargercombo91096.aspx))
One battery would power the Camera + Arduino + Logic circuitry via the Arduino
The other would power the two motors and the two servos via there respective controllers.

The only thing this is missing is a 5V Switching Voltage Regulator to power the Camera (of which
I'm currently looking at this:
http://www.roboticsconnection.com/p-38-5v-switching-voltage-regulator.aspx (http://www.roboticsconnection.com/p-38-5v-switching-voltage-regulator.aspx))

I hope to also implement as much of the stuff I learned in the tutorials here as I can, and plan on revising this plan based on any feed back I get.
Thank you greatly to anyone who takes the time to look at this. Hopefully this is allowed in
this section of the forums.

Here's a slightly cheaper servo you can use for your pan/tilt
