The fundemental hurdle for "breaking into robotics"
« on: October 23, 2007, 10:36:35 AM »
Besides the obvious basic knowledge required..  what does everyone believe the biggest hurdle is?  I know for me its been structure..  very difficult to make a sturdy robotic base for walking and such.

What about you?  Whats hardest?

I feel structure also.

Aligning the wheels and making it level are such a pain!

The hardest is when something in your program does not work and after hours of of checking you realize you put an extra 1 somewhere....

lol, I am still walking on a four-legged robot but the base has been a constant problem.  I had a "running" base for about 4 days before the plastic cracked.  I am now looking into building the rough shape out of foam, then fiberglassing over it for strength.  I am hoping to build a base sturdy enough for some semi-long term development..  enough to make it walk properly, push objects, that kinda thing.

Oh well! I sure wish I had access to a 3d part making machine :)

I think understanding microcontrollers was/is the hardest part for me . . . so many complicated thingies in them . . .
