I could only guess, as I don't have a Mac Classic.

When you open it up, look for damage/grime. Visually inspect for damage.

Check the power supply voltages.

one of the surface mount chips is practically falling off. i think i'm able to fix it but it's going to be tough X.x. if anyone has a classic 2 mobo they'd be willing to sell to me even if it's a dead doner board let me know!

well it worked.a bit of soldering then a trip through the dishwasher to remove capacitor juice did the trick. there's a really cool version of tetris on there too

it's not as unsound as it sounds. unlike batteries capacitors don't always completely drain when they leak and sometimes not enough to make a difference with them. what does cause a problem most of the time is the fact that the capacitor juice is conductive and interferes with all kinds of things but water on it's own is non conductive. dishwashing gel is also usually a base in order to clean greases easier making it ideal to clear up capacitor juice. as long as you remove all the food particles in your dishwasher and run the board alone or with other boards using liquid detergent then it's actually allot less risky then hand cleaning (ESD, finger oil acids, breaking components with the force of cleaning or damage from soldering). as long as you dry it completely before use i'd say it's the best first for the old mac motherboards.

does it leave any residue or funny smells in the dish washer that stay there for a few weeks and contaminate anything you wash?

nothing i've noticed. in fact i took it out and ran a load and the dishes came out fine. i don't even think there's enough fluid to make a difference really. i have a few old motherboards that have been leaked on that i might try this on before soldering new ones.
