I know what are you talking about. If you can find the kit in the Radio Shack store (not online) at $150 (or less) it is good enough to learn robotics with it. It uses Basic Stamp microcontrollers and you program it in Basic. They give you the compiller in the box, so you don't have to spend more money for that. You also have several upgrade kits on the Parralax site, like threads, legs, an arm, sensors and other stuff worth checking out. All the products are very well documented and addressed to beginners.

One word... AWSOME!!!

The Parallax BOEbot is a great way to get started for several reasons:

The kit is very popular with schools and has been proven as a stable, solid, reliable platform
The support forum is very, very, very active and you can get answers to any questions you may have
The support from Parallax is world class... any issue with your order is taken care of quickly and efficiently

I got started in robots about 8 years ago with a BOE and learned a lot!  Funny thing is, 8 years later, and I am still learning... that is what is great about robotics!

NOOBinDistress, remember to search the forum before posting . . . ;D

do a search on 'boebot' and 'boe bot' for many other opinions

If you think you are capable of building a robot with out a kit, I would do that because you learn tons in the process (usually by your mistakes), however if your just starting out and are not sure where to begin or how to build a well engineered base, the Boebot would be great. I do suggest that after you get comfortable with a kit, that you try to build something from scratch-unique, and you will be much more proud of your accomplishment.

I agree with Brandon121233....

My first robot was the BOEBot, then my next robot was a "scratch-built version"
