Title: Where to buy components?
Post by: elsint on September 06, 2006, 04:34:16 PM
Hi,

I am a new guy in this forum and also in USA.

I have a controller but I need other parts(motors, sensors, etc.) to begin my adventure on robot building.

While I am new to this country I don't know from where I can buy electronic components.

If you guys can suggest me any retail shops or websites I will be delightful! :)

I am residing in California if that helps.

Thanks!

Check the robot parts list  :P

I just redesigned it a few days ago, so let me know if you have improvement ideas.

Thanks,

That'll help.

But instead I am searching of a shop or something that I could go in and buy 8k resistors and such.

Radioshack or a hobby shop in your area might have what you need for electronics. But you may be just as likely to find the resistor you want in some old junk electronics . . .

For hardware you would want either a HomeDepot or a Lowes Hardware store.

For DC motors you could buy a cheap cordless drill and hack it open for the motor and batteries.

I often buy toys at Walmart or some toy store and break it open for the electronics parts . . .

Anyone else with ideas?

Today I'll be going to Walmart and Home Depot.

Let's see what I can get.

Thanks for the advices!

Hmm,

I also have 2 hardware stores in my city's downtown. I might take a look at them.

Bad side is they are closing and 6 pm that doesn't suit with me. >:(

Nothing I could find in Walmart and Lowes Hardware.

I need to make some online purchases it seems.
Title: Photo sensor search
Post by: elsint on September 08, 2006, 02:35:25 AM
Well,

now that I purchased most of the components, I have still left some.

Fuse, can be found easily.

Photo sensors, could not find.
I don't have much knowledge on sensors, so I could not come up with any.
Most important thing for me is the price right now. If any can suggest me a photo sensor I would be very glad.

So a photosensor (photoresistor or phototransistor) are really cheap. Even the nice ones can be found for under a dollar. I think radio shack would have them but not sure. I always buy my electronics components online . . .  :-\

Radio shack stores are pretty weak for electronic components. You might want to try searching if any of the majer companies have distribution places near you. Some companies to check are grainger, allied elec., mouser, newark, or jameco.
