Building simple robot, need some answers
« on: June 14, 2009, 08:53:56 AM »
Hey, I am totally new at building robots, but I have always been interested in them, so I just went ahead and started to build the 50$ tutorial. I realized there were some parts I could not find: LED 10ohm capacitor, 10uF 250v capacitor, and male breakaway headers. Are there any stores I should look into that might have those products?
Thanks,

Son of a....... darn it I wish that kit was around when I got all my freaking parts! Lol. It cost me like $150 for all that crap (plus the servos) and I got fewer items than that..... darn.... oh well lol
I might just buy that kit... Thats one hell of a deal for all that stuff...

i cant really see how much? it isn't really that hard to scroll down the page until you see "220uf, 20V"
although for a complete newbie noob... maybe...maybe...

It was mostly shipping and crap like that. On some of my orders the shipping almost cost more than the parts I was ordering! I dont remember everything exactly. The biggest issue was multiple different sources for practically each part or something. And I didnt mean to say $150. It was $100. My bad

If only you had ordered through Digikey it would've been only $8 CAD on shipping, and plus it's there the next day! :P But for that service you can expect to pay a little extra on some of the components, but that's no problem if you order in bulk... it evens out.

P.S. Gear, I must say that you put together a really great package! ;D

Thanks! I hope the availability of the package gets around (here on this forum) to help the beginners. It just seems that parts procurement shouldn't be a frustration for someone that just wants to get on to the actual act of robot building.

think admin should put that on the tutorial were the parts are at if you would rather but the package and in all honesty if I was just starting out I would rather buy that versus having to find the parts...

OK, I don't mean to take over this guys thread, but I have a related question:

Where can I get the servos needed? And don't they have to be modded to be used as motors (i.e. spin 360 degrees?)

Sorry for the stupid questions, I'll try to make up for it by answering some programming questions later ;).

well, most online hobby stores have servos, you can also try ebay and local shops...
they have to be modified to spin more than 180 degrees as they have a pot inside which can only go 180.
if you cannot find hs-311's dont fret as most servos will do the job, just check the specs.
