Title: all robots should have lasers
Post by: Admin on April 25, 2007, 07:26:37 PM
I bought this laser pointer two years ago but just never got around to adding it to any of my robots . . . appears that this guy beat me to it!

the description of his robot is here:

and how he uses a camera and the laser pointer to find objects (neat idea!)

pretty cool

I want that drivetrain. so quick and accurate. (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e398/RussianCommy/drool-1.gif)

thats a pretty sweet idea, now it just needs a laser that can cut through steel beams!

i'm actually using the same method of laser ranging on my current robot project except i'm using one of those DIY laser level things that draw a straight line of laser light so i don't need the servo.
it works pretty well but you need a fair bit of processing power on board.

I just found some compact laser pointers for a bit more than $2 each, and hooked them into our robot.  See -

I think they are the same as http://www.microbric.com/page.php?sId=20

yea but wouldn't it be more efficient if you go infrared...    the laser looks cool in some cases, but wat happens if you dont want a red, blue, or green dot.

with infrared lasers there is no blink reflex making them far more dangerous to people's eye sight.
as a result you would need to use a far less bright laser.

He has a new version, and it was inspired by my Stampy robot!!! :D

This is what he wrote on his blog (http://ashishrd.blogspot.com/2007/11/object-tracking-using-camera-and-lasers.html):
Quote
Hey folks! Here's a little something I built about a month ago, but couldn't get enough time from college to write about it. Well, it's an object tracking camera panner which tracks any object moving in close range. Unlike my previous method for object tracking, this technique will track almost any moving object, irrespective of its color, using two lasers for edge detection. Depending on which laser is focused on the object, the computer decides which direction to drive. I came up with this idea after watching a video on SoR (Society of Robots) of a sumo robot, called Stampy. Stampy uses a single IR rangefinder for edge detection. Watch the video below:

I used lasers instead of IR rangefinders. My initial plan was to use a single laser..but then it occurred to me that I would have to shake the laser left/right continuously for tracking the trailing edge of an object. So, I decided to go with two lasers instead of one. :)
