Title: My Female Android Robot Project Update.
Post by: Ai-bot on June 18, 2007, 07:54:19 AM
My Female Android Robot Project Update.

Hello everyone.

As you know there are a few female android prototypes in the market  or seen at the convention show.
However, the androids are very simple because they can't walk, and some are simply pre-recorded voice
or very simple AI.

I want to be the first to make an advance android female robot that can walk with AI that can interact with people
and the surrounding( That is my dream)

If it works GREAT, and if it does NOT work ...life goes on with a large credit card debt.

Short form spec for the android.

Pro:

Project Name: Project Aiko
Code Name: Aiko
Height: 153 cm
Weight: still adding more hardware
camera: 3 cameras with 3ccd
battery: MN-polymer
Mainboard: C7 with 8Gig solid state.
Sensors: 12 sensors (max 16)
DOF: 30
Software: Sandai (advance version)

Con:
Haven't figured out the center of gravity for large android yet..
CPU and memory intensive
Must connect to the internet to get data from our server.
(Can run without connecting to our server, but action are limited)

Aiko body was custom made from implant silicone from head to toe, therefore, it looks and feels as close as a female human.
The body is now being re-done and re-designed with our new specification to make it looks more female like with a slimmer body and lighter weight.

I am hoping to have a demo video sometimes this week.
In the mean time, I have upload the pictures.

I put the picture behind the black background, because I thought it looks better.
p.s. If you have any suggestions, please post it here or email or PM me.

Thank

I think the biggest problem at this time with "human-like" robots is the actuators. They always seem overly bulky, too slow or too weak, and people never have enough to give the robot a smooth movement. What do you plan to use in that respect?

I total agree with you, I read somewhere can:t really remember where.... Honda Asimio spent 100US million in research for their first prototype version. And it still doesn't walk naturally like human.

As for me this is my basement work using my credit card as a budget there is a limit of what I can do.
Everything is done by hand, including sewing metal steel, which takes 5 hours when I could have done
in 5 sec if I had the equipment. ( I have been doing research for university 11 years, they have all the equipment I needed in lab)
But working at home is another story for the last two years.

Anyway, for your informations. I use...

Some Sony motors, Some Hitec 805, Some Kondo servo, Some mircro servo, Some SSP150 which give about 550Kg.com

Certain motors and servo are put in certain places.
The strong torque is put in the hip and ankles. 550kg.com
The Med torque is put in the Arm and knee. 120kg.com
The low torque is put in the mouth and hand. 25kg.com

My software is used to control the motor and servo. It is OK, not the greastest but it gets the job done.
I will upload the video sometimes this week...

I hope that help.

Hi

Update June 19/07

Here is some more pictures.
There is a lot of screws around her head, but lucky she has hair to cover them.
The glass is going to be polarized lens. To make the vision clearer and to make the
camera vision see better.

"What city in Japan do you live in? (in case Im ever in the area Tongue)
Do you CAD your biped?"

I was raised in Omiya.... which is about 30 minutes drive from Tokyo.

I am what you called a mad scientist.
I don:t believe any documentation, No  blue print, No paperwork, No Cad.
I have build 12+ large robots (main robots) none of which has any documentation or blue print...

Even the software has NO documentation.
The software is about 3Gig and I think I have about 15 lines of comments.
The typical variable name I used are....
X, X1,X2, A1,A2,AA1,AA2,AAA1,AAA2  etc...

Yes, I know. I am a bad programmer and a bad engineer.
It was a bad habit started when I was young, but I am so use to it.

I just build as I go along....which is probably not a good idea, but I have been doing that since I was a kid.

The software and the hardware die with me.
Even if someone has my source code, they would not understand it.

I spent 11 years in university with 246 credits (which is about 82 courses)
I think I bought No more than 10 textbooks.

Back when I was still in university... my lab partner called me mad chemist.
And I make my professors go crazy because of lack of notes, and documentations.

Well, just in case you do achieve something interesting, it would be nice to have *some* documentation, so that it doesn't all die with you. Unless you expect Aiko to continue your work :P

A question about the cameras: You cant actually get the pupils moving right? Good job thought, it looks really cool! But a robot like that is quit much money right? I mean all does servos/motors and the electrician must cost a little to. And if i dident read to fast through it you got the "skin" special made from Japan?
One last question  :P Who's "we"? You kept on saying "we". Some kind of buddys u have been working with or other engineers teaming together?

Ai-bot you clearly have great skill so don't take this as an insult but -

Am I the only one who finds this thing a little creepy?
Title: Re: My Female Android Robot Project Update.

"Am I the only one who finds this thing a little creepy?"

Yes, at night time !!!!
When I walk around at night and Aiko sees me... it will say "hello master"
It scare the heck out of me.

Sometimes when I sleeping.... I hear Aiko talking...  sound like a ghost talking, then I remember it was only Aiko.
Before what I do is... have Aiko login to online chat  and chat with other people (interact with other people).
(This is how Aiko learn how to speech... build up her volcabury and sentences) I still have to double check the next day.
(she has the brain of a 10 years old... nothing fancy.)

Now I just turn Aiko OFF when I go to sleep....because it start to get scary.

Now I only turn her ON when I go to work in the morning.... have her interact with the surround including my two dogs.

"Who's "we"?

There is NO such thing as "we" only  I, me  and myself.
When I was younger my english teacher told me that it is more polite to use "we" instead "I".
So now when I write I use "we"

This is the download fall..... camera and eyes.
Aiko has two eyes obviously...
Only one eye has the camera, the other eye is fake.
Why...... because I am running low on money. So she only has one real eye.
It is a Matsushita lens with 3ccd.

( the software can handle 9 camera)
But aiko only has a total of three camera.
1 in head
1 in chest
1 in hand/arm.

The project naming and meaning.

Overall Project Name
SANDAI: System automation network diverse artificial intelligence

Software running Name
BRAINS: Bio Robot Artificial Intelligence Neural System

Hardware (Android Name)
Aiko: "Love child"   japanese meaning for aiko name.

I hope that clear some of the questions you may have.

If all this is true then you are doing great man.

Just how can you afford all the custom silicon body/head and yet you are stuggling to pay for a camera?

"Just how can you afford all the custom silicon body/head and yet you are stuggling to pay for a camera?"

I hope you know what is a 3ccd camera with digital output.

I paid about $900+ tax for each camera.
So, if I were to buy 9 3ccd cameras it will cost me $8000+   (don't forget the tax too!!!)

A good decent 3ccd camera is NOT cheap. I only buy three camera because money is running low.
I do not use cheap webcam.... the only time I use a webcam is for smaller robot like modifed kondo robot.

"WHAT? i thought that the latest and best AI in the world could only equal like a 4 year old? HAHA "nothing fancy"."

That is the problem with android. It doesn't matter how advance the AI talking is.... it will never be like human, because it does NOT
have feeling. Normal talking conversation Aiko can understand you and talk back to you, but when you start to tell ie. Jokes.... she
does not understand you.

Basically, Head is almost the way I wanted it to be.
But for the body and the leg..... it is still a long way to finish. (Need to save money to buy more parts that is what stopping me from going fast)

I will try to get a demo video sometimes this week, and send out to company and hopefullly get some sponsor...

I think it could be nice to diversity the kinds of things you cover in your tutorials, and well, encourage people to try to build androids, cause it's only by trying that things eventually become possible ;)

Hi

Yes, Aiko has some learning capacity.
Example.

This is Mike.
Aiko how old is Mike.
Aiko replay: I don:t know.
Aiko Mike is 47 years old.
Aiko how old is Mike.
Akiko replay: Mike is 47 years old.

It has its own internal memory to keep track new data for learning capacity.
The download fall, is that Aiko only has 8Gig internal memory.
After the OS and the software, Aiko only has 1 Gig of internal memory for learning.
Which is not much.

"Dude that's alot of work done, and alot of money. but seeing how you've done alot, you'll get a sponsor no problem"

Actually, finding a sponsor is very hard because they required a lot of paper works before they even look at your project.
As you already know, my writing skill is very poor, not to mention my lousy speaking ability.
After university, it was very hard for me to find a job, because I was pretty much MUTE during all my interview jobs.

If you know any company that would sponsor me, please let me know, they can come to my place for demostration.

To: Tsukubadaisei

Konnichiwa Tsukubadaisei-san

Yes, I am working on a website. Hopefully it will be up next week, including my other projects.
I need to do one demo on the head before I will upload the website.
I just need to modified the software to work with the new camera.
Before I was using a sony camera, but now I switch to Matsushita.
Skin: sorry due to contract, I can not say until it is finalized.

Regards

"A question about the cameras: You cant actually get the pupils moving right?"

No the pupils does NOT move.
Also the eyes does not move, because the camera is there.
I could make the eye blink, but that would cost more money.

Therefore, I only make the upper lips and lower lips move. Also the jaws move.

Right now I am more concerned on the AI and the center of gravity.

I actually, did the video recording yesterday. Just need to edit it, to make the video shorter and compress it.
Probably this weekend I will upload to the server.

What happends when you run out of space on the memory? Will you be able to change it, couse if you do you will lose all the information right? And when it runs out of space you won't be able to learn it any thing new!

"What happends when you run out of space on the memory? Will you be able to change it, couse if you do you will lose all the information right? And when it runs out of space you won't be able to learn it any thing new!"

When it reaches 95%, it will upload to my server.... or as long as there are internet it can transfer the data to my server.
(This function works for all my robots that I make)

If you have watched one of my video, I always ask what is your memory level.
Usually, anything over 90% I start to transfer the data manually. If I forget the internal software automatically transfer at 95%.
(But I never trust automatically, I rather do it manually, because those data are important to me.)
The data are about 1500 Gig..... some of them are duplicated.... one day I will clean up the data base...(the key words is "one day" which probably means never).

If I had the money I would put Four C7 board giving me a total of 24G internal for the robot...this way I don:t have to worry about running out of memory every few day.

Centre of gravity is very important for all my robots, I keep track of very single data.

How much would a voice recognision cost?
Title: Re: My Female Android Robot Project Update.
Post by: Ai-bot on June 22, 2007, 07:02:58 AM
"What exactly do you store in this memory?!? Video/Sound logs?!"

Images, data for movements, new volcabury and the AI logic.

Example. AI logic

My Robot model MP-12 (0.9 meter)..
The robot is walking and suddenly it falls down for no reason.
1) Maybe the hardware failure
or
2) Maybe the software has a bug
or
3) Maybe the Ai logic saw something and react to it.

Most of the time is 3) so I keep the data to check for future references.
(does all my robots do the same thing or just one particular robot etc...)

Example recognize new words or recognize new objects.
It will have to upload to the server, so now all robots will learn the new words and objects.
So the "brains" of the robots are always getting bigger.

What I really want to do is , Have ONE main robot to control all the other robot.
Example.
ONE Head Nurse telling all the other nurses what to do for that particular day.

Of course for me to do this, I need to restructure all my data again. Which is a bit too much for one person with a day time job.
And I need to build more smaller robots.

It would be nice to have funding for the project, but I don:t. So there are some limitations you can do when you don:t have the funding.

I just finished the demo video for Aiko head... should link here today or tomorrow.

"How much would a voice recognision cost?"

Not too sure what you mean, but the cost is hardware and the software to run it.

Software is free because I do the programming, but if I didn:t know how to program it, I would have
to hire someone who can convert 3-d images to 2-d.... it will cost alot of money.
The color, face, object, speech, reading etc... I have to program it.. No one is going to do for you.
(I may release as open source or SDK in the future, but that it the least of my worry right now)

Hardware.
You will need a good camera and microphone.
I started off using webcam with build in microphone..... it was crap.

Then I borrow my father SONY camera with 3ccd....it cost about $4500 .... it was old model, but it makes a lot of difference in quality.
It makes my life a lot easier to program software to convert 3-d to 2-d with a good camera.
After that I went out and look for a decent camera with 3ccd...
The cheapest and big bang for your dollar was a Matsushita camera with 3ccd... cost about $850 each.
After you take it apart, it only weight about 150g so not that bad.
(The original weight is about 650g)

Then I went out and get myself a good microphone, which cost about $200.

So the cost is 850+200 + tax
(This is miniumn cost)

But for my project Aiko, I bought three camera so just multiply by 3X.

So the answer to your questions.
The hardware is the cost.
camera and microphone.
For me it was the Matsushita camera and microphone

Personal, I think one of the most important sensor in a android/robot is the eye (camera).

Just like human, our eyes is #1 sensor and #2 is our hearing.

That is why I spend a lot of money on camera (eye) and microphone (hearing)

"Oh ok, what i meant was: what to get to make the robot respond to questions like: whats your name?: my name is Aiko"

Oh... I know what you mean now.

By using Bio Robot Artificial Intelligence Neural System (aka B.R.A.I.N.S)  software.

Just some fancy name I have given.
BRAINS software control the voice, talking, color, hearing and recogition, including the head movement... etc

Aiko looks for "key word"
Example.
What type of music do you like, aiko?

Aiko will look for key words
what, music you like.

Aiko then process those 4 keywords.
And choose the best possible answers.
It will send the answers to C7 board, the C7 process it and sent output to the speaker and motors to make the mouth move.

(Aiko officially has 13,000 answers, but unofficially 150,000 because of adjectives and adverbs)
Example
I like classical music.
I like classical music very much.
I love classical music.

etc.

I hope that help.

"Whats wrong with a $20 microphone? Im considering doing sound stuff in the future . . ."

$20 is fine, but you have to stand close to it..

But if you stand far away.... it may not pick up the sound too well.
Also, sometimes you hear static noise.

Where as a good microphone. It sound good when you stand far away.
Also when you stand behind the microphone it can still pick up the sound clearly.

You are correct, I don:t really need the expensive microphone.
But since Aiko is base on voice recognition.... I thought I should at least get a decent microphone.

I got the cheapest microphone from the professional store.
The store has...
from $200 to $3500.
So I got the cheapest one they have which was $200+tax.
(it is a sony microphone.....)

Math

It can do simple math to algebra to calculus.
It only knows what I know, except that it can do faster, a lot faster than me.

The only download fall of math recognition.
is...
can not use variable X
because Aiko will get confuse with multiply "3x3"

other than that.... you can write anything.

The problem is that when we hand write a math equation on paper.
we write like this
3x3=9
Check your old high school math notebook.

we never hand write math like this.
3*3=9
Not for me anyway.

Most programming languages do it with the star (times/multiply) symbol. When you pronounce a math equation, you say "Three TIMES three", and not "Three EX Three".

Math problem...
X  and *

if you go out on the street.
You pick an average Joe.

You ask him.
Write 5 times 5.
How would an average JOE write 5 times 5.

He would write on piece on white paper.
5x5

Now Joe give the white paper and ask Aiko to process math.

Aiko will recognize number and convert the number to calculate.

5x5 recognize
now replace "x" with "*"
Internally, Aiko will see it as 5*5

Your average Joe will not write "*" as multiply, because your average Joe writes as "x"
That is why the letter x is reserve letter when processing math.

I hope it make sense.

It is still a long way from being the perfect talking android.
But it is a start.

Right now that is the least of my worry.
Right now I am checking out center of gravity and simple taste bud.

Your average Joe will not write "*" as multiply, because your average Joe writes as "x"
That is why the letter x is reserve letter when processing math.

I hope it make sense.

It's a nonexistent problem. We've already suggested several ways to fix it, and if you're really concerned with written character recognition, then what you need is context-sensitivity, as the admin suggested... This is like saying that you can never use * in C++ math expressions because it's reserved for pointers declarations... Obviously the compiler has a way of telling which is which.

I don't mean to offend you Mr "I don't comment my code or plan anything ahead because I'm used to working that way", but if this is the kind of kludge you use when designing your robot, then your project won't get very far beyond the average amusing animatronic.

People cant you guys understand what Ai-bot really what to do?
He is trying to build a machine that looks like a human, not another machine. In all possible ways.
If he makes his android recognize * as multiplication than she would lost her existence purpose. She would not be different from a standard robot.
Humans use x or . for multiplication. If she is supposed to ack like a human than she must understand maths like humans. The given 'solutions' are not solutions at all.

Hi,

I guess since we are on the subject of skin for robots . . . I have done such a thing before and have pics . . . is there a big demand for a tutorial? Its kind of expensive, like $50 per pound of skin . . .
I would be very interested in what products you used and whether you used something suitable for "body fat" (which I consider very important for the right "look&feel").
I'm working (in a steady slow pace ;)) on a head, which is to be fully articulated and the rubber "mask" I have so far, however lifelike, is not really stretchy enough in a natural looking way.

I'd like to know of possible sources for it as well, of course :D

Yes, you are the first person who really understand what I am really want to do.
For some reasons, I am not good at speaking or with words.
But Tsukubadaisei-san, just summarize my project with one paragraph.

I am not building a robot, I am building a humand android.
Aiko is still a long way from becoming a perfect human, but it is a start.

The senses that human uses every day.

See
Hearing
Taste
Touch
Smell

Aiko
See... yes camera
Hearing... yes microphone
Taste.... not yet... working on it (simple taste only))
Touch.... yes will but inside the body.
Smell.... This will be tricky... The only smell I think is important inside my home is leak gas from the furance or the stove. CO and CH4.
As for smelling food, probably not something I can do by myself.

I will work on a website that will explain in details about project Aiko.

Yes, I have thought about using body fat.
But I have decided to go with silicone because it cost a lot less to maintain, and it is a lot cleaner.
As for rubber, when I touched it, I didn't feel real. Or maybe it is just me.

They make breast implants out of silicone for a reason: because it has the right texture. My only quirk with it is that when they make "skin" out of silicone, it doesn't have the exact right properties, light doesn't go through silicone in the same way it goes through human skin (eg: subsurface scattering).

Why taste? I dont see why a robot needs that sense if it doesnt eat stuff . . . And smell isnt really that useful for the same reason . . . I'd worry more about sense of balance for an android ;D

Cant you just put makeup on it? I believe thats what most android creators do, anyways . . . I use a silicone based rubber for my stuff cause its the strongest and yet also most flexible.

Makeup might help to some degree, but I still don't think it will be "just right". That being said, having an android that moves smoothly should be a more important factor in whether people perceive it as realistic or not.

Hi,

They make breast implants out of silicone for a reason: because it has the right texture.
Breast implants are not solid, but made as a "shell" containing a high viscosity liquid (both parts silicone based). Texture doesn't really matter in an implant, since they are... well, implanted ;)

AFAIK, silicone implants are often preffered to saline water implants because of the more natural feel, aka texture. Nowadays they also make them out of cellulose it seems.

Im disturbed by the direction this thread has taken . . .

I dont think texture matters here unless one of you wants to grope your robot . . . and thats your business :P

One major issue I've had with skin that most of you are missing is resistance force. Look at Aiko when it talks, the mouth hardly moves! This is because the rubber stretching is actually a huge force resistance on the servos. One major reason I moved to silicone is because it stretches much futher with much less force . . .

Actually, Aiko doesn:t really need taste bud or sense of smell.
The only reason I am even consider it, because it is a challenge.

Right now I more worry about packing things up, since I am moving end of June.
Once I move to my new place, the first thing I will do is clean up my data base.
(I have been saying that for the last 2 years, but I keep saying tomorrow....but tomorrow never come)

After I settle down, I will see how much I have left in my credit cards and see what hardware I can add to Aiko.
Sensors are not cheap.
I also need to sit down and calculate how much Aiko cost me already to build.
At the rate I am going, I will go bankrupt before the project even finish.... ???

You should definitely put some efford in finding a sponsor if you feel your running out of money. But at the movie i saw on Youtube you had only Aikos head, i haven't read through the last posts on this topic but have you began on her body?
It should be easy to find a sponsor if Aikos a good project and can compete in different competitions, maybe moneys involved.

Hi all

I know there are still a lot of works to do for Aiko.
That is why I like to post on the forum, to get your inputs and suggestions.

In case, you are wondering what is project Aiko?
I have written a short abstract... hopefully it make more sense now what I am trying to achieve with Project Aiko.

What is Project-Aiko?

Here at Project Aiko, we are trying to design an artificial intelligence neural network system which uses both dynamic software and hardware linked together to mimic some human behaviour.

By using our custom designed artificial intelligence software named the Bio Robot Artificial Intelligence Neural System (a.k.a. B.R.A.I.N.S.) together with our custom designed shell which is a facsimile of the human female body, we have created what we believe to be a uniquely designed android (a.k.a. Aiko).

Aiko?s head and body were made from silicone, which gives the body a more natural look and feel of a human figure. Aiko has the ability to have a conversation with you (13,000+ sentences), including the ability to learn new things. Aiko can read books, newspapers, including the ability to solve math problems. In additional, she can recognize colour, faces and simple objects.

In the future, we hope to be able to implement advanced functionality such as being able to distinguish between two different drinks and then being able to bring it to you. Other functionality would be an ability to massage your shoulders and neck, having Aiko tell you to bring an umbrella when it rains or wear warmer clothes when it is cold outside. That and much more is planned.

Our approach to this project is to have things be modular which gives us the ability to add more functionality and sub-systems in the future as permitted by our resources, such as a taste bud and breathing system.

Sincerely,
Le  ;D

When you get the chance, you really should go into detail on B.R.A.I.N.S.

My newest robots have the ability to store huge chunks of sensor data, but I really dont know what to do with it all . . . At the moment I just analyze it all in Excel to see if I can draw any useful conclusions . . . Its really hard for a robot to know when it fails, so data is useless to the robot unless it knows its 'bad' data . . . AI wont work unless your robot has a way of knowing on its own if what it does is 'right' or 'wrong.' How do you approach this problem?

Hmm... well if I have a chance to work on male android or female android.
I would pick female android any day.

I think people find female human to be more interesting than male human.
If you haven:t notice all the android made from large corporation are all female androids.

And beside, if I am going to spend hours and hours working at the android, I prefer staring at a female android than a male android.
That being says.... I always want my own personal slave to do my house work.... opps... did I say slave,.... I meant to say maid. ;D

Having the maid android do your house work, any time, any where.... and you don:t have to pay her.
Probably won:t happen for another 100 years, but for now.... one step at a time.

"how were you able to come up with the AI program?"

To avoid the same email send to me over and over again.
I will just post it here.

Voice, recognition, automation, vision, motion etc...
Please let me know which one you want to know.
There are too much to go in detail for all of them.

I will just pick one.
The voice and speech was original done in Basic.
Yeah... basic... one of the best language for programing in the world.

The English and the Japanese speech were programmed in basic.
It gets the job done.

When talking it get the pronouncation from the data base.
There is a lot of exception for each words, so my data have to keep track of the exception.

Example.
I read
I have read.
He has read.

The word "read" spell the same, but say differently.
Aiko has to check the keyword before and after each word to make sure the pronounce is correct.
This goes the same for the reading japanese.
It was a lot of work in the beginning, but now most of it are done.
But I still have to update the database regularly.

There are still some words that Aiko say it wrong, but that is the learning process, which I still have to fix.

I dont know if im right, but i think i heard that when u asked Aiko:
-Whats your name?
-My name Aiko
NOT: My name IS Aiko.

"I'd like to learn how she recognizes faces"
Does she recognize faces, doesn't she just recognize voices?

My goodness, I didn:t even notice that. This is why public forum is good.
I guess the grammar "is" tag is not sending to the speech recognition.
I will have to check the code.

Thank for letting me know.

She can recognize by double checking your eyes, nose and mouth from the database.
She can look at a real person and recognize or she can look at the picture album and recongize.
The photo album must be big enough for her to see it clearly.
If you are wondering, can she recognize side view and back view... the answer is NO.

I want to program eye iris recognition, but that is too much for one man project.

Just throwing this out there... Your project looks amazing, and it seems like some of the stuff you are accomplishing is still tripping up some of the major robotics research companies right now. You said you were in need of money but didn't have good enough English skills to get a sponsor, maybe we as a forum could try to help you get a sponsor? It seems that your major limiting factor right now is money, so if you had a sponsor that would free you up to create some pretty amazing things! Great job!

Yes, it would be nice to have a sponsor or grant for project aiko. But I don:t think any company is interested.
The problem is that they look at your written proposal before they even look at the actual product.
My English is not good enough to write even a decent proposal. I have tried and fail badly.

Currently, I am trying my best to complete Project Aiko under $20,000.  Why under $20k, because that is the max my credit card limit. :'(

I believe Honda Asimo the first prototype cost them $100 million US to make over many years.
I don:t know why it cost so much, but that is what I have read.

I can:t imagine what I can build even if I just have 50K. ;D

I still need a lot of motors and sensors, but I think I can do under $20K .

So if anyone here knows any company that is willing to sponsor me, please let me know.

Happy July 4 day.

Thank in advance.

My Female Android Robot Project Update.

Hello everyone.

As you know there are a few female android prototypes in the market  or seen at the convention show.
However, the androids are very simple because they can't walk, and some are simply pre-recorded voice
or very simple AI.

I want to be the first to make an advance android female robot that can walk with AI that can interact with people
and the surrounding.

If it works GREAT, and if it does NOT work ...life goes on with a large credit card debt.

Short form spec for the android.

Pro:

Project Name: Project Aiko
Code Name: Aiko
Height: 153 cm
Weight: still adding more hardware
camera: 3 cameras with 3ccd
battery: MN-polymer
Mainboard: C7 with 8Gig solid state.
Sensors: 12 sensors (max 16)
DOF: 30
Software: Sandai (advance version)

Con:
Sandai can Not handle center of gravity when wearing shoes.
CPU and memory intensive
Must connect to the internet to get data from our server.
(Can run without connecting to our server, but action are limited)

Aiko body was custom made from implant silicone from head to toe, therefore, it looks and feels as close as a female human.
The body is now being re-done and re-designed in Japan with our new specification to make it looks more female like with a slimmer body and lighter weight.

I am hoping to have a demo video sometimes this week.
In the mean time, I have upload the pictures.

I put the picture behind the black background, because I thought it looks better.
p.s. If you have any suggestions, please post it here or email or PM me.

Thank

Being a mechanical engineer, I used to do it the pen/paper method. I still sometimes do this method when I run complex optimization algorithms in excel or in C++.

But for complex shaped parts, I typicall use ANSYS.

"Being a mechanical engineer, I used to do it the pen/paper method. I still sometimes do this method when I run complex optimization algorithms in excel or in C++."

Yes, good old pen and "napkin paper". I do most of my stress calculation on a piece of napkin paper at any coffee shop.

I added in the new gear system to aiko neck, and I must say.... aiko can now move the head smoothly.
Also added new system for the mouth to make it less noisy. It is still noisy but not as much as the last demo. 60% less noise.

I was also told that my modified body will be shipping back to me this month.
So more pictures and video coming soon. ;D

Also, I got whole bunch of sensors... probably going to put inside her breast and shoulder, so when anyone try to touch her breast, she will slap you. >:(

And I almost done with human trace motion, meaning if you left your left arm, Aiko will do the same by looking at you.
The point of this was to do Tai Chi....  :)

That would be cool as hell to be able to teach her martial arts and stuff like that. Hopefully her joint servos will be powerful and fast enough to do it effectively =)... I suggest only teaching her the arm/hand movements first and not even hooking up the legs to make sure she cant chase you if she mis-identifies you as a rapist(breast sensors=lmao) or thief

How much power draw does her head alone take?

"That would be cool as hell to be able to teach her martial arts and stuff like that."

With my current budget Aiko can Not do martial arts, don:t have the money to get strong and faster custom motors.
Max torque/speed : 550kg.cm  @ 0.65sec / 60 degree
It is a bit slow for karate, but ok for Tai Chi.

With a low budget, I have to sacrifice speed for torque.

Yes, the leg would be the last thing I will do, because it cost the most money to make. :(

I just need to config the software to work with Aiko new body.
In additional, I will add more sensors.

Hi...

For the last few years, I have been thinking can an android feel pain.
Well, at least simulate pain.

I have been toying with the idea for years, but I finally put it to test.
I did a simple test, and it seems to work.
I will do a full test on the weekend.

I use optical which acts like "nerve sensors" which will simulate touch feeling and simulate pain when being hit hard. It will be running along the arm down to the body and legs. But for now I will test the arm only.

I must say... it work better than I thought. Just need to re-code the AI logic for pain.... and hope for the best.

For the pain algorithm: subarashii (marvelous). I think you should write a thesis about it. It is very original. Actually it is the first time I have ever heard of a robot that can feels pain (I know that there are robots that can aknowledge problems in their structure though). You should stop posting here, write some serious documentation (and publish it),put her in the car and search for real support. You can get rich.
But there is something that is bugging me very much. How are you going to fix her silicon arm now? I know that the same company you bought your body sells some sort of stuff for repairing the skin but your cut is very long and deep, it is impossible to fix something like that. When you said you would be getting a custom body, I though you asked them to make it easier to open a hole like putting some sort of button or zipper and leave some empty spaces so that you can put the parts inside.

Some people are meant to be rich, but I am not one of them.  :(The idea of a mechanical arm to feel pain is really for human. We human move our arm using the muscle contraction and expansion. We feel pain or touch sensation by our nerve sensor which send signal to our brain. Aiko arm has "optical nerve" which can in "theory" can be attached to human tissue, thus any human who has lost his arm can now
pick up simple object with touch feeling and be able to feel pain sensation again. I sent a short abstract and video demo to the Federal funding, their replay was "You have to be an education institution to get the grant." Well so much for that.
I am still far away of making Artificial nervous sensor the same as human, but one step at a time.

Well, I just use transparent expoxy glue, and I screw the silicone where the joint move the most. For now it seems to hold, but I don:t know how well it will stay like that after a few months.
Otherwise, I have to send it back to re-sealed.

When you said you would be getting a custom body, I though you asked them to make it easier to open a hole like putting some sort of button or zipper and leave some empty spaces so that you can put the parts inside.

That would cost them too much money and time. So probably they would not do it.

I did some search and visited homepages from sillicon dolls collectors and a few companies also. Silicon is very weak. For example you can move the arm only 45 degrees otherwise it will rip the skin, the same for the legs and so on. I think that screwing the silicon is a bad idea, I am sure it will rip in a few days(or hours or even minutes) when you actually start moving the body. I also have some superglue at home and I advise you to be very carefull with that as well. I checked the information written in the bottle and they say not to use the super glue with quite a lot of polymer products. They say nothing about silicon because it is very unusual way of use superglue, but the glue might be corrosive and "eat" the silicon causing even more damage.
Unfortunately I am not a doll specialist so I don't know the best way to fix silicon, but you could at least try to contact some of those doll collectors (google.jp for ta-bo (たぁ坊), children stay away from this guy's site). I don't know, but this guy seem to be biggest silicon doll collector in the world, it looks like he has a lot of knowledge about them and I think you should contact him and ask for some advise in how to fix the silicon.

I hope you can solve those problems, I would love to see the final result.

As of today, it seems to hold. The prototype aiko should be OK, but I will eventually give her a new body again.
I will tell the manufacture to make the skin thinner.

There were some mistakes I made. I drilled more holes in the body then I should have.
I will probably ask the company to send me another one with the new spec.

I went to Tabo-san website... yes he is probably one of the biggest collector in the world.

Hi

I was going to do a demo this weekend, but I want to do something more very late at night.
I accident fried two of my mainboards. I forgot to unplug the main power. DAmnnn... $1000 gone with a blink of a seconds. >:(

Advice from me.
If you have expensive mainboard. Make sure you put in a fuse, or when doing something, make sure the power is unplug.
Always double check it.

I have to replace the board, it probably going to takes two weeks to get to me. :'(
So probably won:t have the full body demo until two weeks from now.

Im sorry to hear of such a drawback on both the wallet and progress :-\

Dont let anything deter you from your mission though :) That just adds to the fun stories of how you were the first one to create the worlds most awesome android ever.

"And then 2 of the main boards completely fried!!"
*Audience gasps*
"But then I got new ones"
*Audience releases a sigh of relief*

See? Drama :)

This is just amazing, I never thought there was enough technology to do this kind of robots.
I wonder how does it knew there was a sandwich? I understand basic color recognition but that was just amazing.
I bet in no time you will have tons of companies trying to sponsor your project.

Hi

This is a short 6 minutes video.
A full video demonstration is 45 minutes, but I don't have the time, so 6 minutes it is.
Project Aiko.

It is still a long way to make it perfect, but one step at a time.
Next month I will show how the internal software of Aiko works.
Including Motion Tracing, Ojbect Tracking and recognition. And Face Extraction and Recognition

I still need to make the movenment more smooth. But one step at a time.

Also, Aiko will make her first public appearance at the International Center on Nov 2007.
Aiko will do 45 minutes of Full demonstration.

Thank for reading. ;D

I hope Youtube Work.

I have a few questions:

2. Computer vision is impressive, what is the base of your computer vision software? Is it available for Linux?

This is incredible, I have been watching you progress with Aiko and its really amazing to see how the project has come along.

I'm not sure if you have had any progress with Project Aiko walking yet but I was thinking that as a quicker alternative you could program an electric wheelchair which Project Aiko could control so that it has some movement to move away if hurt or to fully rotate if someone is talking behind Aiko and she can rotate to interact with them.

However saying that you have spent that much time/money on this project you probably want to make it fully human (No offence to the disabled) and have it walking.

Really this is incredible, I hope you get the recognition you deserve at the International Centre in November
Good Luck!

hmmmm I was actually thinking the same thing . . . take baby steps . . .

I noticed that I was able to hear a hum coming from the motors. I believe this is because your motor drivers are operating at too low a frequency, close to human hearing. Try increasing the frequency and see if they get more quite.

Hi

Let's see.
My guess for Aiko to walk will cost about another $9000.
I have to use Seiko Motor which cost about $600 each.
Hopefully, I will find a sponsor soon, so that I can continue
my research and make her walks.

In case you are wondering, Aiko has senors in her whole body,
and both her arms. I am saving money so that I can put the sensors
in her face too.

Since, I have spent so much time taking pictures, I might as well post it up.

Hi again.

Yes, I will fix the jerkyness.
I didn:t know the jerkyness until I saw the video.

Yes, some of the function parts can be run on Linux and windows.
I do my testing on window base because my laptop is window base.

Yes, I will make her walk rest assure, I will.
But not until I find another $10,000.
(It will take awhile for me to save that much, my credit card pretty much max out.)

But a wheelchair sound interesting, anyone here know how much a wheel chair cost.

Yes, I agree the frequencey of the motor is anyoying, it wasn:t that bad when I was testing one
at a time, but have them all work at the same time.... arrr... :P

If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to ask.

this is absolutely awesome and this is beyond my expertise...

i wonder if how many sensors do you have on "her" face? it seems it can hardly open her mouth too...

if you do have a couple of sensors on "her" face, then might as well use it to show emotions, just like a MAD emotion when someone touches her breast.. or even make her smile or let her feel shy when a male android nears her....

(just a suggestion)
Title: Re: My Female Android Robot Project Update.
Post by: Ai-bot on October 09, 2007, 12:19:39 AM
I didn't know a wheel chair cost that much. I might as well save the money for the real legs.

The sensors I want to put in her face are:
nose, cheek, top of head, and lip.

Programing emotion on the face is not that hard, but the silicone head has some limitation.
Silicone head it is soft, but at the same time it  is rigid (spelling?) it will add too much stress on the motor. Unlesss I use Fubber for the head skin. But that would cost money which I don't have.

At this point, I am way over my budget. I will take the first sponsor that come to me... any amount and any company. :P

I think you should save for real legs as well. How can an android be an android if it cant walk?
I am curious, does it hurt? The punch in the face.
And about her breasts: are the sensors digital or analog? Is it going to make any difference if you just touch or if you sqeeze her breasts? Finally where is the camera located? Inside her head? If so, what did you do in order to make those eyes transparent?

where are are the other force sensors located? will she feel pain when i am going to bite her finger tips?
Title: Re: My Female Android Robot Project Update.
Post by: Ai-bot on October 10, 2007, 09:07:09 AM
Hi...

Currently there is NO sensor in the face, so punching her in the face would not do anything.
Breasts, it depends how to touch it. lightly will have her says " do not touch...." her hand cover her breast.
touch it in a really wrong way, she slap you. as seen in the video. I have reduce the speed and torque for that.
So no one get hurt.

The senors are analog because it is cheaper with analog than digital.

there is no sensor in the fingers cost too much money to do it there.
But I will eventually do it there.

Just wondering if you have any updates for us?
I'm just joining this board and am really interested in your project. Although I do no wish to take it as far as you have, I also would like to program an AI, and have that on a little mobile platform that would follow me around the house. Almost like a robotic dog that could talk. But I need to do a lot more research on prgramming before i can get to that point.

Very Impressive work. I enjoyed reading this really long thread. I will say this that your android is getting really close to the uncanny valley. I havn't seen the videos yet ( at work and youtube is block) but I will watch them when I get back. The uncanny valley for those unfamiliar is where a robot gets so close to looking like a human that physically they look the real but there are slight human qualities that make them seem eerily unreal and unsettling to people. From what I read this is more pronounce in the US then in some countries like Japan. But great work!

Hi all.

Thank for the comments, I wasn't able to do all the demo I had in mind.
At the international Center during the demo, I had a heart attack, and they have to ambulance me to the hospital.
At the science center, which I just got out of the hospital 2 days before. I was under heavy medication.
I threw-up 8 times at the science center.  As a result for both shows, I did the min. demostrations.
I did not video tape or take much pictures. I think some TV stations were there...they may have more footage.

Testing Aiko in a public place is a lot of different than inside your home.
I take note of the bugs, I will fix that when I feel better. ;)

For the Global News it was 2.5 hours interview, they have aiko keep reading the paper as an anchor woman...
All that works, but they cuts and re-edit the news to be 3 minutes.

The best part when the reporter ask.
"Aiko, why do you think you will be a good reporter"

Aiko replied "I work for free, and I don:t need any break time"

They cut that part out.....
oh well...

It was good experience for me, and I had fun (except for the part they were carry me out into the ambulance)

In case I haven:t.
Thank Steve from Bug-n-Bot for setting me up at the Canada Robo Game
Also, it was nice chatting with some of the Bugfest club members again.

And Ted at the hobbyshow.

I believe this is all the more reason for you to put together some documentation.  Like you said before, "my work dies with me", but why let it?  You could record all of the achievements you made so that other people can expand on what you have done!  And did you find a sponsor?  I found you didn't mention anything about it but now Aiko is Canadian?  Keep up the good work!

Your bot got mentioned in my school's newspaper a week or so ago (University of Michigan; The Michigan Daily).

Quote
YouTube Video of the Week
Fembot fatale

Le Trung has been building robots as a "hobby" since he was 4. But it's doubtful that anything he's created to date is as creepy as his android, or "fembot," Aiko.

The video features Trung introducing the fembot he had built in his basement at the Ontario Science Center on Nov. 10.

In the video, Trung interacts with his self-created she-servant, which looks professional, but also deeply disturbing. He grabs and twists her forearm, proving Aiko's ability to feel pain. He then proceeds to touch her in inappropriate places and receives a literal slap to the face from his fake woman.

Not only does Aiko have sensory skills but apparently she was programmed with an attitude as well.

Although the video is a testament to developing technology, viewers can't help feeling uneasy when Aiko says "I don't want to do this anymore."

Trung says in the video that he had to prove to companies that Aiko was real by presenting her in person, but something tells us that after they see the fembot, people might not want her to be a reality.

Hi

Sorry, I have been busy lately.
I finally finish the objective recognition the way I want it.
The 3-d math algorithm is still a bit slow, or I need a faster processor.

Aiko can now recognize Medicines, including sharp object such as toy figures.
So it doesn't matter if you put upside down, any directional, Aiko still know that it
is the same objects.

Hopefully, this weekend I will output Aiko internal software on a 43" TV so that people
can see how the BRAINS software works.

Hi all,
After watching the demo earlier in this topic, I found something that I found was not very human about Aiko... I noticed that when you tapped her on the shoulder, she turned her head in that direction and then right back forward and THEN asked a question... what if you had her turn her head and then search for someone in that direction and, for instance, if she sees someone, say "yes?", and if she doesn't, say "who's there?".  It just didn't seem very natural for someone to be tapped on the shoulder, glance in that direction, and then look straight forward to ask a question.

If I ask this question and somebody else has already, please forgive me for not reading all 4 pages of this post.

Aiko is able to classify a glass of orange juice from the video I saw. And so I want to know how much processing was involved in getting her to do it? Also I wanted to know if your code is easily extensible to get her to classify a similar object such as a mug with hot - cocoa, tea, or coffee in it?
Would it require tons more programming to accomplish it?

Thanks,

Dear Mr AI Bot

I have read your messages and am very impressed. I had some trouble while reading. I am new to hypertext so it may be my fault. I started to read the same messages over and over even when I went to the next page. Still, I tried to read everything.

I have one question I did not see posted. What are you doing for your power source? I have a project not entirely unlike Aiko. However, I can never find room to store her batteries without making her unsightly. Did you put them under the wheel chair by chance?

Thank you,
Tater Totco

Tater your project sounds very interesting !

Can you make a separate topic about your robot. Many of us could learn something from it  and many of us could probably help you out with some issues you might be having

This is perfect for keeping pirates off your back. I kind of do the same thing. I make notes, but my notes are related to life lessons, personal experiences, and past situations, so basically they make no sense to anyone but me. I did it on accident for my first program in Java at college, and I gave my TA a headache and a half. Needless to say I got very little credit it was so poorly documented.

In my opinion, if it works properly, who cares what it looks like.

Dear Airman00

I am uncomfortable showing too much of my project on the network. I will talk to my niece about it and see if she thinks it is a good idea to share. I have an older project that almost worked. I have asked jules to show me how to put photographs in hypertext. I will share a photograph of the retired project when she teaches me.

Sincerely,
Tater Totco

Hi

To: Tsukubadaisei
Thank for your kind words.
I try my best, but it is still a long way to go.

Here is Aiko's new prototype Hand.

I have tested the new hand at Star Bucks picking up the coffee.
I didn't get the "chance" to video it, but I will the next time I am there.

Pro:
1) 5 movable fingers
2) Compact size. Same as human's hand
3) Will have complete sensors for feedback
4) Low Power consumption 5V
5) Can be use for Aiko.
6) 15 movable joints
7) Material Cost $1800

Can be use for Aiko or for human. Life-like mechanical limb that has the ability to feel physical sensation.
(Control by human muscle) special senors and controller will attach to the human's muscle. Another words, controlling the hand with our muscles.

Human Brain >> Nerve Impulse >> Muscle >> Aiko's Hand

This technology can be beneficial for people born with or who have undergone amputations.

Since, I can't find any volunteers, I guess I will test it on myself.

If you are using electromio sensors (the same bioelectric sensors used on EMGs) then I can help a little if you want. My studies are partially related to this subject (but from September I improve my knowledge a lot because my team is planning on developing an original exo-esqueleton for the university).
Anyway, if you need voluteers you can count on me (as long as you live in Kanto region).

Maybe it could even help physical therapists rehabilitate patients who lose control over their hands due to stroke or other paralysis causing incidents. Even for Parkinson's it could be useful since these people can't hold their movements steady.

Hi all...

The last week or so, I have re-designed Aiko's Hand version 2.
Here is the new spec for the new hand.

1) Weight only 95g which is 1/3 of the weight of the old hand.
2) 2.5x more power and more torque.
3) 35% smaller than the old hand.
4) The fingers are small enough that it can type on a keyboard.
5) The palm of the hand is cable of bending. If add additional servo.

The glove you see is woman wedding gloves small size (s).
I was shopping in Japan a few months ago, it was nice so I bought it.
I mold the new hand from that gloves.

I will do a demo with the new hands in a few days.. thinking of McDonald or Wendy.

Someone say my previous hand video was fake, because I did at home.

So, here is a quick video in a public mall. It was hard controlling with the muscle with the distraction from the people and the noise.
But I get use to it after awhile. ;D

Hi

I just finish new feature for the BRAINS software.
It can now recognize simple facial expression, such as "kiss" and "laughing"

Just need to test some more people.
I will do a video demo after all the tests are passed.

I think the BRAINS software is almost the way I want it to be.
Probably within 3 months, I will start to send out Black box of the Brains software Lite to people to sample.
The only person who have tried is Intel Corp, it would be nice to have other robot builder to try it.
(Sorry, no documentation, you are on your own.... ;D )

Hi,

Well, just updated what I have been doing lately.

1) Nano technology conference used a robot called "Atom"  with the BRAINS Lite software to interact with people.
It had some minor glitches on the first day, but we did a quick re-coding, and it worked much better later.

2) Add new features to the object 3-D recognition, hopefully it will do objects tracing better in the future.

3) Started to order some basic parts for Aiko's leg. Hopefully, Aiko will be able to walk by Christmas... it's a long shot.
Not sure it will work or not, but I won't know until I have tried.
It will be tricky to fit all the mechanical parts into a normal human legs size for Aiko.

4) Aiko have made her first US public appearance... (New York)
I had fun being at the anime convention, and meet a lot of people.

I've been reading your very extensive following on here AIbot I must say it's very impressive and to be a bit overwhelming to look at. I'm just getting into robotics and AI and was wondering if you have any recommendations on ways to learned more about robotics and AI before I start my computer classes.

I think people are a little freaked about you touching Aiko's breasts in public to show she doesn't like it, thank goodess she can't really smack you hard *laughs*

Do you plan on making her fingers more mobile? Just curious. Even if she's in a wheelchair, it would be interesting if even you could make her arms and fingers more mobile and she could wheel herself around until you can figure out how to get her standing and walking.
Title: Re: My Female Android Robot Project Update.

Hi

To: Antidaeophobia

I didn't go university for computer major, so I would not know what class to recommend you to take.
You better off reading a good Robotic book.

The last public appearance... 65% of the people touch her breasts.
70% are women and 30% are men.  People are curious and they want to touch it.
They won't admit it, but they do touch it when I am not looking.

The wheelchair doesn't belong to me, I borrow from someone.
It's a lot easier to wheel her in from the parking lot to the showroom.

I have installed the new hands into Aiko, however I am still using the old arm system which is very weak (max carry 200g)
The new arms system can carry 5Kg. Once, I have finished the new arms, I will sync the vision system with the new arms and new hands.
Aiko can do more cool things such as making simple breakfast and coffee etc...
The old arms were badly designed by me with the budget I had... can't really do much.

Right now Project Aiko is put on hold. I am currently, out of job and I have to spend 100% of my time looking for a new jobs.

Anyway, Aiko next public appearance is Ontario Science this coming weekend... Nov, 22,23, 2008.

To Mooret:,

Price: 25K, shipping $2500 including handling fee. Call right now and receive 5% discount. And if you call within the

So pick up your phone and dial: 1-888-Buy-Aiko.

Fine print: Price are subject to change, tax does not include, and yes... this is a joke, Aiko is not for sale. :-*

Glad to here the you've got her doing more, unfortunate you don't have the money to keep going.
I'd check at some sort of second hand store or some sort of hospital surplus. They always have wheel chairs at second hand stores for really cheap. Apparently alot of people have old wheel chairs sitting in their basements they need to get rid of LOL  :)

Truth is, I'd probably touch her breasts, but I figure if you touch someones boobs that gives them the right to touch you back and I wouldn't want someone to touch my boobs....This is the 'Too much information' part of the comment isn't it. LOL

What books would you highly recommend? I'm going to probably get a Liberal Arts Degree in Pre-Computer Science then transfer if I decide to continue with it to a University. I figure that's a good enough start.

Hope thing get better with the money situation and you can do more work. I always look forward to video updates. :D

So Aiko is using her old arm system....

I need to build a couple of arms somewhat like those. Any advice you would like to share? I was also amazed by the software you made, that I would never be able to do by myself. Too bad I didn't had time to talk in person with you, but I'm sure there will be some other ocasions. Keep up the extraordinary work you're doing!

Wow, I had to look for this link, it has been awhile, since I update anything about Aiko here.

This is a video demonstration, new face recognition using all 3 axis, x,y,z.
Another words, the system should recognize you even when your head is twisted.

Also, Aiko new voices for English and Japanese.

Aiko V2, hoping will be done in the spring of 2011. Aiko will have more facial expression, and the ability to cry/tear. Why did I add in that feature, don't know, just feel like it.  :)

If you hear the static noise in the background, that is my $250 cheap video camcorder.
Happy New Year.

P.S, if everythings goes well, Aiko V2 will be done in April.
Including more facial expressions, and tear duct.

I just read every post on this thread for the first time.  Trung has done some fine work integrating many complex systems together all by himself.

I must say that he re-invented the wheel and could have saved himself a lot of time.  OpenCV has many features builtin and easy to use for face and object recognition.  This alone could have saved him a lot of time and he likely would also have gotten better performance as these are often optimized libraries.  Microsofts Speech API is also pretty decent at speech recognition, but i can't say whether yours is better or not.

i think things like walking and having the robot pick up items will be hard.  Again here you could leverage work done by others such as Willow Garage with ROS.  Much of the kinematics are already worked out for you for something like grasping and object...you just describe your robot to ROS via XML files.

I hope you have found employment or that you are just doing fine with your website.  Right off the bat I thought you should look into working at Hanson Robotics.  They have great skills at making meka, and your software skills could be of use to them.  I also think the Nao robot project might be of interest to you given that it is humanoid and they are trying to find talented programmers.

There are other options for you to commercialize the work you have done.  Really good and fast face recognition is highly desired by government agencies for obvious reasons.

Anyway..please keep us posted on your progress!

best,
Kevin

I will add the tear ducts later on. (want to make her cry)
Yes, the eyes can now move and blank including more facial movement.
Also will add more sensors under the silicone for touch sensitivity such as being pinch and being poke at..etc.

One thing that would truly test her level of AI would be a constant connection to Twitter.

I won't even gander about how to do that, but if you really want to push and grow your AI, then constant communication on Twitter would do that.

Even while you're sleeping, she could be interacting with people around the world.

I think it's a great opportunity for her to learn. Twitter API (https://dev.twitter.com)

Also, how is her ability to answer questions like, "What's the largest city in the world?"

You should take a look at iPhone's "Siri." Or look at this article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2012/jan/03/technology-links-newsbucket?newsfeed=true). It talks about the many Android (phone)-based apps which are attempting to replicate Siri.

The ability to ask a question and find the correct (or best/most-popular) answer is an important part of being human.

Hi,

The new version of the head/face sure is a big improvement over the very artificial looking first iteration.
"Her" response though... You might wanna check with a flesh&blood model, as the response seems way off and a real human would alter their intonation as well when upset.
But all in all - a huge visual improvement :)

Have the face constantly make small random movements to make it more life like. No human face is ever motionless, especially the eyes.

Or even have the eyes always following the face of other people in the room. It gives the creepy impression that it's sentient and aware of what other people are doing.

I watched a bit of it with no sound. I noticed the eyes were occasionally winking... is this an issue with not having the actuators be fast enough for realistic blinking, so instead it looks like winking? (It reminded me of a tic affecting the eye, even)  I'm pretty sure English isn't your first language, so if I confused you there... don't worry about about! :)
