implanted biofuel cell generates power from glucose
« on: May 19, 2010, 10:40:51 PM »
One of the major breakthroughs needed to convert people into cyborgs is a system that converts glucose into energy to power the implanted electronics.

This article shows that this has finally been achieved. The prototype generated an average of ~2uW inside of rats.

You really need more like 10mW inside of humans to be useful - but this prototype works enough that big companies with money will probably start investing in it. I predict 5-10 years before you'll see it commercially used in humans.

Now THERES the answer for longer trips between charges for electric cars. Just keep the car stocked with hamburgers.

Well, if you don't get the implants you'd be considered Amish.

Picture your cell phone or IM messenger implanted in your head. Telepathy!

No way man. I'll stay Amish.
I get obsolete fast enough with nimble gray matter. The steamroller is closing in with increasing velocity as it is. I'd hate to trust that destiny to silicon technology.
