recently on instructables i have been unable to see all steps on one page with my account i get this message
Viewing all steps on one page is only available with a Pro Account.
, does anyone know why they have changed this?
also, do you know if this only effects new accounts?
i really think this is going to make them loose people :-\
-
Im not pro, have been a member for a while though. I can see all steps on one page.
-
ok, its just for new accounts then...
damn lucky i have an old account!
-
all it is is you cannot view the first to last step on the one page, don't worry you still see all the steps that have been published
-
im just glad i was able to change the email on my old account, i couldn't bare switching to each step at a time...
-
I hate it when the instructables have pictures, and they are usualy really important like schematics or something, but you cannot view them because you need a pro account... that is what pisses me off!

when did you create your account?
-
a month or two ago.
-
I think they started this Pro system about a month ago...so it's obvious you dont have the 'pro' privileges...i think the old members are allowed all the steps on one page facility...i can even see all the pics...but i think the monthly fee is'nt all that bad...but it's obvious like Smash said that they're going to lose their fan following upto some extent

yep. still can ;D
but it's obvious like Smash said that they're going to lose their fan following up to some extent
yes, considering most of their users cant be bothered to/cant pay the monthly fee...
-
Websites like instructables really shouldnt charge a fee for viewing and accessin information correctly (like seeing pictures that go with the instructable).
Instructables never created the actual tutorial or instructable, that was done by a member. Yes you are using the instructable service to share the information but that service has always been free. So why suddenly did they decide people should pay to view the content? whats changed? NOTHING.
Imagine if google decided to suddenly let you search for free but charge you for redirecting you to a link... its a similar analogy.
Presumably instructables previously used advertising revenue to make their money. Have they stopped advertising 3rd party websites?
AND is the instructables service any faster? It was always slow as hell for me...
-
so they're essentially making money off member submitted content... that's sad...
i haven't noticed anything different about the speed, it seems the same to me...
-
i don't think speed is a problem with me...but i agree totally with paulstreats....in fact "Craftsman" has started advertising double on instructables since it went pro...and they have the very best sponsors( Epilog, for instance) for their contests...
maybe , after a few months, even the old members might be asked to pay...
they're clipping our wings, they should be teaching people to fly...
-
Well, im pissed... Old members now have to pay too :-\
I really am disappointed in the site for this, i think they will loose a fair amount of members...
-
you bet they will, that has been the end of a number of sites. Asking current members to pay for what they used to get for free.
-
I don't know why but I have a regular account and it lets me view all the steps on one page. I'm not complaining though. When I find a Instructable that I like I always download the PDF anyway.

Good idea, and it would be good reference material in the future.
-
Absolutely. I have a folder on my harddrive full of them and also web pages that I have come across. I use Firefox and it has an add on called UnMHT which actually lets you save a complete page like Internet Explorer does. And I also download all of the videos I can for later reference. I do that by using the Keep It! bookmarklet from keepvid.com

HAH, win! I just found out i was logged in to one of my new accounts...
I found out i have two old accounts ;D
