Title: newbie guidance!

hey,
im COMPLETELY new to robotics....and i figured out this is a really good site...
so,i was planning to make an autonomous line tracer and i was about to use transmitter and reciever sets,wen my friend told me bout the TSOP....so can ne1 tell me EXACTLY how it works?and since im new,i dont know a few terms....(sorry!)....like burst length,frequency response,etc.....and i would also like to know how to connect the TSOP to my microC....im using a PIC16F877A btw.....

pleez help me out....eagerly awaiting help!! ;D

dont go for tsop for ur 1st bot ..use the simple LDR(light detecting resistors) which are much simpler to interface..and work pretty welll...go through all the tutorials in this site..they hel u a lot...

First off, there's no such thing as "the TSOP"!
TSOP is just the prefix of a vast range of integrated infrared receiver modules and there are lots of different types with different abilities.

Some of them you can use, others you can't use, so without specifying the precise application, in as much detail as data exchange format und alles, it's impossible to tell you which ones you can use.
And until that time, terms like burst length etc. is quite meaningless as well.

I agree with superchiku, LDRs might be an easy way to do it, and Soeren is right TSOP is just a packing name, here you have a description of it:

But I think i understand your doubt... I was new in robotics not long time ago... hehehe

There are many different ways to approach the solution to a line tracker:
· One is what superchiku suggested, by using just a LDR-LED couple, so you generate light with the LED and measure the generated Light with the LDR using a voltage divider circuit (please, feel free to ask about any term I use here)

· Other solution, which might be close to the "TSOP concept" is to use a simple component such as the CNY70 (http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/vishay/83751.pdf (http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/vishay/83751.pdf)) in which both, the detector and the emmiter are built in the same package... It might seem more complex, but the idea is exactly the same, thats why these components are called "Reflective Optical Sensors"

Not quite the case... When talking IR receivers, TSOP is not a package description, but, as I wrote, a prefix of a large number of IR receiver modules.
(When it comes to package names, TSOP is usually a suffix, although only used when ordering or when designing a PCB).

friends,
really great ur helping me out....by TSOP,i meant TSOP1738....and the LDR's are a good start i know.....but they r of no use wen room is open as they saturate to ambient light......what is a really good solution to this problem??

cover the ldr's man...like wrap it up with blc cloth from all sides along with an led around it hence if u face them down ur goon light up the led and get data only from the floor or watever ur facing the ldr to...and infrared wont wont work outdoors...u forget our sun..
