Title: <<<< Im the new guy
Post by: Anoroc on April 03, 2008, 05:17:55 PM
Hello everyone. I found this site just yesterday and decided to sign up. So this is me saying "Hi there".

When I was younger, I used to take all my electronic toys apart and turn them into new and exciting things, like tennis balls that swam :P

Anyways, I have been playing around with making some new "toys" and also have some plans for future robots. This site looks like its full of great ideas and great robots! Maybe some day in the near future, I can actually contribute to someones project ( Ahem, I get to play with computerized CNC routers and lasers all day)  :P

Well, I work for a graphic / sign supply company as a Web administrator / graphic artist. I also run the Router tables for any wholesale work we do. I end up running them at least a few times a week if not every day. On top of that we also have certain jobs that come in which require smaller, more accurate designs. We have 30w, 40w and and a (NEW TODAY) 80w laser. (lasers are totally cool to play and design with BTW) :P

So in a nutshell, any parts needed, I can just design and cut.

well, in the grand scheme of things, I would like to build a small robot that can take directions from a software application. 'Course, I'm really just trying to figure out how to even begin. Mainly, which software to choose for programming, which controller to start with... So it will be awhile before I get to that point :P

As far as anything I've already built -- nothing to really speak of. Just simple machines consisting of a few motors. Nothing that took any programing, by any means.

I actually have started my $50 Robot already :P I drew up some pieces for my base and wheels that I'm going to make here at work. I know im not supposed to worry about how it looks, but after browsing some of the upgrades I can make to it, I really want to make it substancial. That and the Graphic Artist part of me refuses to make it out of junk I find around the house with all the great tools and materials available to me.

I'm going to make the base and wheels out of 1/8" acrylic and coat the wheels with some clear silicone sheeting that I have.

I really want to thank you, ADMIN, for the awesome tutorials you have written up! The $50 robot is an awesome way to get everyone started. (You make it look waayyy to easy though) LOL

Side note:

When I was a kid, my dad purchased a surgical laser that he was going to turn into a CNC cutter. That never really worked out, but I ended up getting a freaking HUGE HeNe laser out of it. One night, my friend and I were being bad and shot the red beam all the way across the lake we lived on. By the time it got to the other side, the diameter of the beam was about 4 feet wide and just as bright.

Being the stupid kids that we were, we shot it into the back window of one of the houses on the other side, it must have scared the crap out of them because minutes later, all the lights turned on and the man and woman were running all over the house trying to figure out what they just saw. We could see the whole thing because the back of their house was all glass windows. That was the end of my laser shannanagans.

The HeNe laser I had didn't have a lens on the end so it just got bigger the further away you were from it. We were testing that out in my back yard one evening. From the back of the house to the end of our yard (about 100 feet or so) it was about twice the size of a softball. You could see swirly designs in it (like a magnified view of the excited gas or something)
