Grippers are rather difficult for a beginner to make well.  You may want to consider a very inexpensive ready-made one.

Don't mean to seem rude but.... Isn't it kind of self explanatory?

You stick a servo in there. If the servo horn moves one way, gripper opens. If the servo horn moves the other way, gripper closes.

Also, here http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=5189.0 is the post with info on a griper design I did. It's pretty simply to make and would probably work really good for grabbing cans.
So if the blue wire goes here, then that means...(bzzzt) oops....

Instead of asking 50 million common questions do some reaserch... robotics takes time patience, and self exploration in the field... in other words learn from mistakes... um it basically sounds like you have read no tutorial atleast read the $50 robot tutorial truast me you will learn a lot and wont have half the questions....

yes i have built a robot... never programmed hehe... but I've been on a first team for two years and I built my first on by myself a while ago real simple one.... but I found that if I would have read the tutorials iI would have saved about $100 bucks.... the most important thing in money is building your own microcontroller....
