You can use visual basic for other robots, and with different hardware.  More specifically, as I understand it, you're not going to be able to put visual basic code on a microcontroller.  If, however, you use your computer as the brain, then you can do this through a serial connection. (and wirelessly with a bluetooth serial connection)

If this sort of project is going to benefit you in any real way, you'll probably want to learn for yourself about various types of electrical hardware.

Here's a link that might help you better understand the different types of components, such as the 5v linear regulator.
http://www.ffldusoe.edu/Faculty/Denenberg/Topics/Electronics/Alex_Pounds/Index.htm
(note, I don't know how useful that link actually is, haven't had time to read it myself, but a good friend recommended it)

Can't help you on the other stuff...

For all your robot parts needs:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_parts_list.shtml

Try mouser.com, they are much cheaper and more honest with shipping than Digikey.com

(and no need to write 'admin' in your subject line, there are many other people that can also help :P)

heys! admin, the link yur friend recommended doesnt work... =\ um, the bread board, does it have to have 356 holes? i can only find ones like 300 holes, 800 holes, etc.

can you tell me which parts on yur list MUST be the ones exactly on yur list? (e.g. does the Grid-Style PC Board with 356 Holes have to be that exact one, or can you use OTHER servos, or OTHER capacitors?) do you get it? sorry , its hard to explain. =[

The only part that must be exactly the same is the ATmega8.

Everything else can be substituted with something similar. If you arent sure, just post the part that worries you.

The ZZ-8753 will work.
(notice that it says PDIP, meaning it will fit in a DIP socket)

oops sorry, i thought you were the admin. hehe.. and um, its important that the e.g resistor stays at the ccertain ohm you stated right? or the capacitor stays the same type.

also would the brand affect the parts? wat if they wont fit in correctly.
