Title: Clumsy V1.2
Post by: kpmcgurk on May 30, 2009, 02:52:44 PM
This is my shot at the $50 robot. Designed and built it over the period of a couple months. the photovore version didn't really end up working. So I just threw on the IR rangefinder and Now it works great!!! Plan on writing my own code for it one of these days though!!

Basicly I have a Polycarbonate base and its running with 2 modified servos. the wheels I got from ServoCity, and i replaced the Water bottle with a caster. Using a six volt 3200 Mah NiMH battery.

I will be upgrading it with 2 Ping ultrasonic sensors along with probably redesigning the base!!

will post up video once I get my camera to work ;)

Ya, I am kind of a "If its worth doing, Its worth overdoing kind of guy" (I know mythbusters quote)

I have been involved With FIRST robotics, so its not my first robot, but first one that I was the only one making ;)

Out of curiosity, how is that roller caster working?

When I ordered my robot wheels, I FORGOT to order one of these ball casters

http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/951 (http://www.pololu.com/catalog/product/951)

My local home depot carries regular casters like the one you have. I'm still deciding whether or not to just get those, or the ball casters.

sorry, My camera Is broken, so it took me a while to get a video. I just got one with my computer web cam and will post as soon as it is edited!!

well to me it is working great, the only problem is that when it trys to get over something, the wheel will get caught up on it because it is not driven. this to me is not a big deal, as the robot was not designed for that purpose, and for the price you cant really beat it!! (I think that at fleet Farm they have the ones that you are looking for, although that is a regional chain, you could probably get one at home depot also, but if not, these work great!!)

ClumsyV1.2, did u actually design your $50 robot before u built it? If u did, did u use any CAD program?

I got a 1 inch caster like that at Home Depot or Lowe's, it's just about the right height for the servo wheels. I think it was $1.50 US or something like that. The ball casters have a tendency to get caught in the grout of my kitchen, or get snagged on the carpet. This doesn't do that (it is heavier though).

;D Sweet Robot, did not get a chance to see the video yet because my roommate is trying to sleep. But, I was wondering where did you get the Infrared Range Finder? I have been looking on the net on my spare time and could not find any. Could you possibly give me a link to the website your ordered it from or the name of the store you bought it from? ???
