Title: IR Source Tracking Turret
Post by: Archetype3791 on December 02, 2008, 03:25:53 AM
So, I am relatively new to the robotic scene, not electronics though; I work as an Avionics Technician for the military. I am trying to build a turret that tracks the IR from a laser i.e. 600nm-950nm and designates it with another laser. I read up on all the basics and I see a lot of photovore bots, however not much on what I am trying to accomplish. Where should I start? Thank you for the help!

Take a look at a wiimote controller...
Look for it's IR sensor camera and please tell more about your application, cause I don't think we can help
you will limited info...

The only sensors you could use for military purpose are CMOS cams... really... with a IR only bypass filter
you can do what you need...
With proper filters you can also do human body sensing... But you would also need image processing...

What do you really need to do... sounds like a bomber auto protector turrent against fighters ans incoming missile...

Generally, with a CMOS camera you can do a lot... But get your hands on one first...
Also, would you be using a computer or a microcontroller and/or FPGA????
Image processing needs a little bit of processing power...

I am trying to build a device similar to the "missile protection system." This is just a little project I am taking up, it is not actually going on a airplane... haha. Preferably, I would like to stick to a basic micro controller and keep it simple, unless a computer controlled system would be an easier route? I got the idea when I saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK6_F6NfJQ0 and thought it would be fun.

Yup, I got it... You know wii right??? It's remote has a very very very nice IR tracking sensor on the front...
Get one and google for wiimote hacks!!!

Have fun!!!

This is pretty tough . . . unless your laser is insanely brighter than the sun, you must use a video camera to detect the laser. Your laser must also do something to distinguish itself from environmental light, such as be extremely bright, have it running at some modulated frequency (like a TV remote), or have it move it a predictable pattern.
