Surveillance Robot Ideals
« on: June 03, 2008, 08:45:18 PM »
Hello guys I'm new here and needs some help. Let me tell you little bit about my self I had four open heart surgery and I live way out in the country with nothing to do except go fishing, ride the atv and play on the PC all day long and drive my parent's crazy...LOL I also deer hunt. Last year I ran up on some poacher on our land I didn't say anything just walked away.
After seeing this site.I thought ya ll can give me some Ideal I need a robot that can at least can go a little over 400 yards 1,221.60 feet, I wanna use my mini Sony camcorder where I can take the poacher pics and send them to the local police or gangwarden  :) or have some kind of speaker on there and scare the crap out of them. This will give me something to do and keep me busy. Any suggestion  will be greatly appreceat ed ?

so there would be no problem controlling a vehicle 400 yards away. standard radio control equipment would do that.

you will face more of a problem transmitting video data back to you over that sort of range. this would require a fairly high bandwidth connection which would be expensive for such a long range.

i would try looking in RC aircraft websites for wireless video cameras. a lot of those guys like to transmit video and need relatively long range.

hmmm

if there is a lot of trees and stuff then R/C flying is bad

I would go with a small 4 x 4 R/C vehicle  and then just get a high powered camera , or maybe extend your wireless network really far and put on a wifi cam and control the bot through the internet

do you want to make it yourself or buy it ?

what is your budget

I wonder if this would get the point across?

oh yah that would get the point across big time put some pepper spyball in there,
they wouldn't come back.....LOL

I'm thinking on building mine kind of like the dragon runner its small low to the ground and hawls butt  here a 3d model what I got so far.
I got to figure out how to mount my camcorder and thinking about putting my small 50,000 volts tazer on there.

Hope the pic comes through.

would you want something that close to the ground? If its going over rough terrain wouldn't you want it to have a higher clearance so it doesn't get stuck?

i suggest using a RC car chassis

get one with suspension for all terrain

then you could either use the transmitter in that, or i like airman00 idea of using Wireless.

obviously i was not suggesting a flying platform. just the video senders that people use on RC aircraft.

as for using wireless ethernet, the only systems that i have seen with that sort of range have used directional aerials.
it would be a pain having to keep your base station's aerial pointing at the rover.

Don't you think the poacher will shoot the crap out of your robot?

If you get video, don't you think the judge will throw the book at them.

So here is a better idea: Add an airhorn to scare the crap out of them AND any animals. Then just antagonize them...

Ah bummer I'll parable have to go with the 4x4 rc truck mod. I wasn't thinking about the ground clearance when I was drawing it. How easy yall think it would be
to modify a 4x4 truck into something like this. This is called Marcbot. I seen it a while back.
Its a traxass emax I think.

Youtube video of some Traxis E Maxx trucks going through what looks like a small obstacle course. Looks pretty nimble to me but these are not stock RC cars.
I saw the E Maxx for about $300 RTR or Ready To Run.
$80 for larger tires pre-mounted,
$35 for pan/tilt with servos from lynxmotion
$150 for 5.8ghz video transmit/ recieve system from Radio Shack, but only good for 300ft.
$300 for complete system from www.rctoys.com that transmits up to 1000ft.
$50 for Misc stuff.
-----------------
$650-$800 for off the shelf parts.
This of course is not including the paintball marker setup and a better radio system to include control of the paintball marker setup.

Man it would be so cool to me to see a whole group of those things play death match autonomously.  Makes me think of that old game Battlezone.

There was another post on here somewhere about robotic paintball. I believe the general thought was that when playing against humans, the reaction time would not be fast enough, and the scanners to detect the other team would not be able to scan far enough out to cross a speed ball field.
But playing against each other??? Now that would be something interesting to watch.

I've actually tried to find a cheap turret for another project I had in mind.  Anyone know of a cheap turret kit on the web? :P
