Title: Ballscrew Machining
Post by: drinu on October 20, 2013, 01:09:13 AM
Hi all,

I am doing a gantry robot were the X and Y will be driven by a ballscrew. I would like to machine the ends of the screw myself, but the question is; are they made from a type of hardened steel? Will I be able to machine them?
(BTW I did not ask this question to the seller since I am going to buy them from China and most probably the seller won't understand me, let alone that most probably he won't not know the material used)

Thanks is advance.

It will depend on what material they use and whether they heat treated it.
If hardened it should be draw down so as not to be brittle so it should be machinable using a carbide cutting tool.
