Not what you usually think of when you think of robots, but mechanical clockwork automatons were built from the middle 1700s and later. This one is from about 1810. Programmed to write three poems and make 4 drawings.
Next time you get frustrated writing software, think about that it would have taken to "program" this by cutting out metal cams...

I was fascinated what I first learned of the history of automatons. I actually decided to do a research paper on them for my animation class at the art school I attend.
