just an idea

So I am completely brand new to robotics and have never attempted to even build one, yet, but I was doing some designing and came across a tiny problem. I'm trying to keep it pretty simple and so it would be light weight and low cost in case I want to try building it some time. The problem is I want to have two legs that move up and down and rotate along the x-axis so it would crawl forward. I got the rotating part and the piece that would allow that and hold the arms but I don't know how I would control them moving up and down. Any sort type of suggestion, idea or whatever would be appreciated. Sorry if my drawing isn't neat, I know that my hand writing sure isn't. Thanks ahead of time.

look at hexapods, and things like that, a quick google search will bring up a load of info.
alternativly look at a youtube video of an old steam train, and how it uses a piston to power a wheel, and a diagram of an internal combustion engine.

The simplest way you can control the motion of your robots leg would be with a servo motor but it would need to be strong enough to support the weight of your robot. Alternatively some kind of rack and pinion mechanism would provide a lot of power but it would probably be slow and bulky. If your robot is quite big then you could even look into using some sort of pneumatic piston arrangement which would easily provide enough power and speed to move your robot as you like.

You could also look at robot arm tutorials, similar to a hexapod, but more crawly arm-like
