most car viper motors are designed to provide torque ,so don't expect speed greater than 100-150 rpm. the best thing to do is to calculate what  torque you need , and what is the momentum of hammer you require, and select a motor accordingly..

Hi,

That depends on what you want to do with the torque, but generally, you need to look at what mass you need to move how far (and how fast).
Putting measures on that is the first step.

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

OK, if we want to pick a load of 500gm/.5kg the rpm will be around 10-20..then?

500g is your mass, but you need the distance as well to get the torque.

Imagine the arm carrying a 500g load being 10cm vs an arm being 1m - see the difference?

Since torque can exist without movement and you probably want it to have a certain impact, you need the speed as well. That is the RPM, if you're calculating a rotating arm.

For every IF there should be a THEN  ;)

IF (length=15cm) AND (RPM=30) THEN
  what?
ENDIF

Is it how hard a 500g weight will hit or ?? (writing in full sentences helps a lot :))
If so, you need to know how many degrees of swing you'll get before it hits (since you're going to accelerate the thing - it doesn't go 30RPM from the get-go).

http://www.societyofrobots.com/mechanics_statics.shtml
instead of asking questions like this, here's ^ a little something called knowledge. with this , you can learn to do it yourself  :o

so basically, read that, and this, http://www.societyofrobots.com/mechanics_dynamics.shtml ,
and please post here if you don't understand something.  we all would be much happy to help out, but most importantly you could learn, and also help out others .
