How about 1) Just about any webcam and 2) RoboRealm  http://www.roborealm.com (free)

Pretty powerful combo.

Doesn't that mean you'd have to run the robot off a laptop?

Yes and a no.  If you have a fairly large microcontroler, you can run roborealm on it (I wonder if Admin's Axon can run it?).  Or you could have a laptop send serial commands to your robot wirelessly (the laptop controls the bot, but it is not physically part of it).  Check out their website for more information.

Only a PC can run RoboRealm. However interface code is in the works to get RoboRealm to interface directly with the Axon by USB. Maybe 2 months, tops?

A good example of RoboRealm working remotely is with the SRV-1 (http://www.surveyor.com).  While this particular system isn't "cheap", it shows how RoboRealm can be run on the PC with telemetry between the robot and the PC via WiFi.

By the way, the SRV-1 is capable of quite a bit of image processing using the on-board processors, but having the ability to connect easily with RoboRealm makes it amazingly powerful.
