Question on ABS plastic and rapid prototyping
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:41:09 PM »
I'm just looking for very rough ballparks here from people who might have experience with this material and rapid prototyping.

If I were to make something like a fairly simple, dome-like shell out of ABS plastic which would fit into a 16" x 16" x 8" box, and with a thickness of about 1/2" at any given point, any ideas how much it would cost for me to get a prototype built and about how much it would weigh?  Under 20lbs?  At this point, I can't shell out for my own machine, as in http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=461.0.  Does anyone have recommendations for good rapid prototyping services?

Edit:  I just realized this should probably go into the body-building thread, and not be a new post.  But I don't think I have deletion power.

Thats a bit large and thick. If you can make it a flat dome, you can probably save $50 to $100 . . .

I would suspect ~$300+.

Just send your part design to the various companies and ask for a quote. Check the bottom of this page:

A few notes, QuickParts will call you a few times asking for customer feedback (annoying!), and Xardas gave me the best prices as of last summer.
