Title: Motor and Torque tutorial
Post by: dcole07 on September 24, 2007, 12:25:23 PM
Could you create a tutorial on motors and torque. I was looking around for high torque motors, but couldn't really find any. Then I was watching Myth Busters and they used gears to increase high torque through a high speed motor I guess. So can you go over motors and torque, but also explain how you can increase the torque of a motor. I'm guessing speed can be converted into torque through gears?

You know how a bicycle work right? a small gear is connected to a large gear. So the back wheel is spinning faster then you're spinning with your pedals (if you want to see the diffrence, compare old bicycles to the newer bicycles). If you switch to a larger gear, you'll notice you'll have to pedal much harder to reach the same speed.

But you want to opposite to happen, you want a gear to rotate slower then to gear attached. Because you want to have the torque on the servo to be much smaller, so what you want to do is attach a large gear to the servo, and attach a  smaller gear to the one attached to the servo.

I hope I helped you out with this :)

Isn't there already a tutorial on that?

If the motor is for a wheeled robot, you might find this useful:

but I really need to upgrade my motor tutorial when I get time . . .
