New...Sonar
« on: May 09, 2008, 03:24:31 AM »
Hi, I have been willing to built a robot for a while now due to my boyfriend, whos doing the $50 robot have desided to join SoR.

But i have a question to do with sonar.

If i was to make a sonar bot would it have to have a bumper switch so the robot new if it had made it to the obstacle, because doesn't sonar only detect objects but doesn't know how far away the are?

Man... you are one luck "couple"!

To answer your question, the answer is that sonar actually does tell you how far away the object is!  that is one of the great things about it!  What sonar module are you planning on using?

Oh yeh, almost forgot to ask.... do you have a sister :)  wish my wife liked robots :(

Sonar will tell you a distance (not 100% accurate), but it is widespread so you won't know where the object is in relations to the beam, just that it is in the "cone" someplace.  Sonar also generally has a minimum range, so sometype of bumper would be needed, whether that bumper is short range IR, or a electromechanical switch, or photodectors, etc is up to you.

Haha Private Reid just became the target of envy for most of the members of SOR.

I wonder how many people go to there significant others tonight and try to get them to build a robot with them as "Quality Time" :)

Of course I do not have a significant other at this moment but I may have to head over to the other university in town and scope out there engineering department for girls.

About your Sonar, I use Sonar for my robot Walbot and I love it, I use the The LV-MaxSonar-EZ1 http://www.maxbotix.com/Maxbotix__Buy_Now.html#Order_EZ1 its really easy to use and it has a great range. It outputs the distance in one inch increments and the interface output formats included are pulse width output, analog voltage output, and
serial digital output. It basically does all the calculating and timing work usually necessary for you.

Out of curiousity, why can't you buy straight from Japan?  I would imagine the prices would be cheaper, as well as the shipping.

We may have cheap electrical components in the US, but you have vegemite (and I am almost out of what I picked up on my trip in Dec)

Here's some I found in asia.  Shipping to US is pretty cheap, so I imagine shipping to australia to be cheaper.
