When I was a kid I absolutely loved MechWarrior 2. Apparently the 5th game is now coming out, and the video is amazing!

Why am I posting this? Well, because just maybe I'm working on a secret biped MechWarrior robot with rocket launchers and airsoft cannons and will upload all designs and Axon code . . . just maybe ;)

. . . are you serious? i can imagine a brat chassis with two airsoft guns mounted on the arms 8)

Wow, this made me want to see again the trailers for my favourite game sequel. Starcraft II. Astonishing.
-
that game looks awsome, and it would be the most visited post on the site if you followed through on your mechworrior robot, it would be incredable

You mean like this?
BRAT based RC Mech Warrior... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOf6SXBGwvg#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

holy mother of god!
yes... just like that!

Speaking of bipeds, it seems that you don't need all those expensive powerfull servos to build one. Of course, size matters. But someone called Ayu was able to pull it off using only 9 gram servos and custom made brackets from aluminum sheet. He also replicated the Robonova controller, how cool is that? So, if you really want to build a small biped and you have about $65 for the 17 servos, you'se set!
Want to see it? Here's the link:

Edit: the robot's weight is 420g and the servos weigh 323g!!! that means all the metal and controller weigh less than a hundred grams!
-
admin, that looks awsome :o

I had trouble believing it worked due to lack of video . . .
But I did some math, and it turns out that it can lift itself using just one leg. So it can probably jump using both legs . . .
(wait a minute, it isn't a mech?!)

Sorry to say, last night I made a mistake. The servos are 9 grams each, so 17 servos makes 153g... Why I typed 323? Because that is the weigh for the 17 servos package if you order them from HobbyCity... I guess I was too tired to think clearly... So the weight of the electronics and metal is 267g, more realistic this time. And of course, there is no battery on the robot at this time, altho LiPos can be added in the soles of the feet.
About the video. The IS a video in the first post from that link (Robosavvy forum) showing the robot doing a balance on one leg (I hope that is the proper description of the pose) so yeah, it works.
(and if you dress it nicelly in an armour, it will look more like a mech...)

I love mechwarrior and even old school battletech from back in the day. I saw some of your posts about you tiny little terror your designing for mech warfare on some other forums :) I want to build one as well but thats a lot of expense for a robot like that. I'll start counting my pennies or something :)
hehe and I can finally play mechwarrior 4 plus the expansion pack because I still have the expansion but someone "borrowed" my mechwarrior 4 disks so I never got to finish the game.

yaaaaayyyy Microsoft cleared it for release!

Now, when it'll actually be released is another question . . . but it'll show up here when it has:

-
MW4, Anyone play mw2?
But, i'll definitely get this when it comes out!
-
Well, its finally out!
However like a billion people are downloading it, and its almost 2GB of files, so you'll have to use bit torrent.
I included the .torrent files attached in a zip file below - I recommend using uTorrent v2.0.1.
After downloading the full files, convert them to a .zip. The two smaller files are patches.
For more information, see http://mektek.net/projects/mw4/index.html (http://mektek.net/projects/mw4/index.html)
(DO NOT use their MTX program, they say its really slow and will crash often)
In other entirely unrelated to robot news, Starcraft II (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003E1UNSG?ie=UTF8&tag=societyofrobo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003E1UNSG)(http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=societyofrobo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B003E1UNSG) was just announced to be released on July 27th. yaaaay!
-
Yes!!! finally :D not only starcraft two but mechwarrior at as well. inter forum competition anyone? :P
-
I just realized I'm stuck with playing only on the Asian servers . . . do you realize how crazy good (obsessed :P) Koreans are?!?!?
Oh and btw, the Starcraft II link above, if you pre-order through Amazon, you get a free beta key. In other words, you can start playing right away.
-
I'm downloading now... When you say "convert to zip" do you mean simply change the extension?
-
ya
-
Ok, I just got the game working . . . but can't figure out how to install the patches.
I assume you need the MTX program to do it, but it doesn't work. Probably because of this:

VIRUS WARNING!!!!!!!
The Mechwarrior 4 that you can download by bittorrent is infected with a virus.
People had reported their anti-virus going crazy on it, but MekTek was convinced it was just a false alarm.
Well, today Norton started reporting this virus under various file names on my laptop:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-080910-5958-99 (http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-080910-5958-99)
Scanning the MW4 folder revealed that MW4Mercs.exe is infected.
Its a relatively harmless virus - considering Norton can detect it. I've been playing the game for a few days now . . .
-
whoa, good thing I didn't figure out how to open a MTX file yet
-
Well, there are three files. A .zip with the full game, and two .mtx files for the upgrade patches. You need to use the MTX program to install the patches, but the MTX program hasn't been working for most people (including me).
I've been playing it without the patches. I saw a few bugs, one of them major, but whatever.
On the bright side, the game was very addictive, so now I have a strong enough reason to be productive again :P
(by productive, I mean I've spent the last few hours scanning for viruses and fixing my firewall :-X)
-
The patches work if you install the game and the patces by opening them in the mtx program but you have to put it in offline mode first or it never gets though to the server to do some checksum
-
The program just hangs for me, I can't even select anything in the MTX menu . . .
They still won't admit the virus:
http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1146 (http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1146)
-
I can't tell if the mtx is the virus or not for me. I in a moment of stupidity downloaded a no cd crack because the game wanted a cd before I got the patches installed. That gave me a really nasty virus so after killing that I missed anything mtx might have done. game works great for me.
They also added a ton of content. New weapons and lots of new mechs. A lot of special tech level 3 stuff from battletech made it into the game. New favorite weapon is the Light PCC with a recharger and capacitor add ons. recycle time is crazy fast and it does 12 points of damage per hit. One good smack from my atlas on a light and some mediums and BOOM :)
-
The MTX program doesn't have a virus, just the MW4Mercs.exe file. A CD key wasn't needed, even without the patches. I normally scan everything I download before I use it, but I thought a Microsoft sponsored game would at least be infection free . . . I guess I didn't question the torrent well enough . . .
I haven't played Mechwarrior since MW2 came out, a decade or so ago, so everything is different for me :P
That said, my Goliath II has a 60 damage 1000m range 8 second reload railgun :o
I gave every mech on my team a 28 damage cannon (the type that explodes on contact). Whenever a light comes near us, it literally flies across the screen from the kick back. Hilarious . . .
-
I have to look into the online stuff and see whats thats all about yet. Might be cool to set up some SOR community games some night. The online side is new to the game as far as I remember.

THAT... would be sweet!

I'd be up for it, or at least supporting it . . . when I'm back in the States, I'll be working hard again so probably shouldn't play games much . . .

They just made a new announcement, emphasizing that NA and McAfee falsely flagged the software:
http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1148 (http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1148)
That said, NA detected 5 copies of it with two different names in my System Restore folder, and 8 more copies of it in my Recycler folder. The detections occurred over a period of 2 days, as if they were activating themselves after a set period of time.
The dataloss was apparently a 'bug' in the software, unrelated to the virus issue. Oops! Don't panic, it'll only happen if you try to patch the software and not follow instructions.
The MTX software not working was apparently also a bug. And their site not working for 2 days was a single server going down, taking out the entire network.
lol

Not sure how to verify what version I have, but I *think* the installation worked:
http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1149 (http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1149)
I just turned off NA so I can finish and beat the game.
-
if you installed only the patches you had in the torrent you have 5 blah blah .20 the install only is .17
-
Yea, but not sure how to verify the patching actually worked.
It said something like 'Did you patch in the right order?' after each patch upgrade.
-
Norton cleared it, no virus after all:
http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1151 (http://www.mektek.net/index.php?ind=news&op=news_show_single&ide=1151)
Also a new patch.

i have so much fun right now!!
