I need some suggestions.
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:03:16 PM »
I need some help in finding a servo that can rotate 360 degrees. Does Hitec or Futaba have any servos that can accomplish this? And I am wanting to find it in my hobby shop, so a specific type would be of great help.

I don't want to have to buy them online, because I am making a trip up to the hobby shop to get some servos for general applications and I thought that it would be a good idea to get this one aswell.

Thanks, Kurt. :)

Rotate 360 degrees or a continuous rotation servo?

If you want a continuous rotation servo the LHS probably won't have them, but one option is you can ask them to order it for you and in a week or so you can buy it from them when it arrives.

I guess that's a good idea, and the reason for the 360 degree stop is because I have a rotating platform, and if it kept rotating to get to the next "closest" position, it would create an issue. So now that I think about it... If you have a general suggestion (internet or not), of a place in which I could find one, that would be awesome.

Thanks Razor Concepts for giving a clarification on what I needed.  :)

have you considered using an electrical stop?
eg something that makes contact to tell the mcu that is has reached 360 degrees rotation?

That has played out in my mind a bit but if I can find a servo with that spec in would be awesome.

Yes, but for this one servo I don't mind spending abit more, and if I can get 2 my buddy can replicate my project.  :)

Use 2 servos, one horn hooked to the other, one servo upside down. Bottom servo does 0-180, top does the remaining 180 to 360.

Or get a sail winch servo, does 3.5 x 360 http://www.servocity.com/html/hs-785hb_3_5_rotations.html

Or get a 360 rotation gearbox ; http://www.servocity.com/html/spg425a-360_360o_rotation.html

Use a stepper motor.  You can rotate any amount of degrees you want very accurately.  A stepper can also move faster.  The only disadvantages are the simplicity of driving the motor, power and size.  Depending on your project though a stepper may be a better choice.  If the load on the motor is small a stepper would likely be a better choice.

I doubt that you will find 360o servos in a general hobby shop, I'm not sure about how big this store is but I would doubt they would have anything but the usual 180o ones. I think you may have to go online for it.

If you want to modify a normal one to rotate 360o there is a tutorial here
