Well, I'm not an expert, but the Axon is not the only microcontroller that you can use for a robot.  For example, a few threads ago, a guy (forgot his name) posted a link for a microcontroller for only $20.  Then another guy posted others that were even cheaper.    From the way I see it, it's like buying a new Mercedes or a used VW; the first is in every way better but both go from point A to point B.
