Title: DroneCell Update and Video Tutorial
Post by: airman00 on July 12, 2010, 07:52:41 AM
The DroneCell will be officially released this weekend at HOPE ( Hacker Conference), and should be popping up in online stores next week. Retail price will be around the $100 mark.
I have an Axon library already worked out, and an Arduino library is in the works as well.

I made some video tutorials showing how easy it is to utilize the DroneCell for those who may be interested.

wow what a product!
I always used the SM5100B in my project which was hard...

Do you already got the Arduino library? I would be very interested!

Thx
Andy

Nope, I've found that the mere connection into the breadboard/connector has enough hold. Even shake it wildly and it won't budge.

A slightly updated version of the DroneCell will be coming out via DIYdrones soon, I'll post when it comes out. I've already tested the prototype batch and the newer ones are awesome! We updated the module to a newer version, so it connects way more reliably and faster. It was a pin-compatible module upgrade, so the board remained pretty much the same ( a few little bonus features were added). Also, the software interface remained 98% the same, I'll be compiling a new library ( for AVR C and also for Arduino!) in the near future.

Also, if someone wants an older version DroneCell, I have a few on hand that I wouldn't mind selling. Send me a private message if you're interested. Price would go for around $85 ( $15 cheaper than online).

What about those who don't use a breadboard? :P

Right now I'm in the market for a "commercial" MCU and checked prices on the DroneCell and have found a variation in price. Is this because of differing features or are the vendors given some leeway on the price? So far I have looked at the Axon II, Arduino, and now the DroneCell.

Sockets on PCBs are really nice for modulability :D

The DroneCell is just a cellular module, not a microcontroller. Think of the DroneCell as a cell phone that microcontrollers can easily talk to.
Furthermore, all stores are already sold out on the DroneCell. Next batch will be very soon.
