Title: Handbook of Robotics (book of robotics theory)
Post by: Admin on February 18, 2009, 11:27:57 AM
I just got this in my email today, as part of the Robotics and Automation Society newsletter.

I haven't actually read the book, but judging by the table of contents (http://www.springer.com/engineering/robotics/book/978-3-540-23957-4?detailsPage=toc) its basically an introduction to classical robotics (and theory of). It's below my expertise so I have no plans to buy it, but if anyone is interested you can buy the Handbook of Robotics at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/354023957X?ie=UTF8&tag=societyofrobo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=354023957X).(http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=societyofrobo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=354023957X)

The table of contents appears to be very thorough to introduce a beginner into the theory of robotics. And of course act as a quick reference book. Its not a 'how to build a robot' book, but a 'bring your understanding of robots to the next level' book.

activities at conferences, in particular ICRA, to represent student
interests to the RAS AdCom, and to facilitate interaction and
communication among all student RAS members.

The Student Activities Committee was responsible for creating the RAS
wiki, the Jobs Board on the RAS wiki, organizing the student party at
ICRA08, and the IEEE-RAS Facebook Page (over 200 member so far).

Student events at ICRA 2009 include a student workshop to take place

*** RAS Island on "Second Life" ***

The Robotics and Automation Society's Second Life Presence, which was
developed by Domenico Prattiichizzo and colleagues at the University of
Sienna with support from RAS, is now up and running on one of two IEEE
Islands in the virtual reality world of Linden Lab's Second Life (SL).
RAS is the first IEEE entity to establish an active presence on SL.
For more information see  an article in the upcoming by Prattichizzo in
the March issue of RA Magazine and the IEEE Second Life webpage at
http://www.ieee.org/web/volunteers/tab/secondlife/islands.html. Also
see comments about the RAS Island by New World Notes blogger  Wagner
James Au at
nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/02/ieee-opens-robotics-lab-in-second-life.htm.

Second Life's official website http://secondlife.com describes it as
"an engaging world shaped entirely by its residents." The RAS site
offers the opportunity to show off new robots, announce events, and
whatever else members envision.
