So after reading some ancient topic about Sparkfun getting fake ATmega 328s, some people had ideas for turning them into keychain ornaments...
I liked this idea, and turned it into a reality (well for me at least)...

Ok it isn't an ATmega, but its a close match to a generic IC ;)
It's from a VCR motherboard , I hand drilled a hole in the corner and threaded a bit of wire through.

Sharp metal, lead soldered coated pins, frequently touching your hands....

The chip is coming from a VCR it's probably leadless.

Sarcasm right??? ??? ??? ???

Why do i have doubts of this statement...

It had a RoHS leaf on the PC board...
First thing I checked was RoHS ;D
Side note: took 2 days to drill through this thing, with a hand drill!

Why would it be sarcasm?

Please tell me!

I though the VCRs were too out dated when we got the lead legislation....
And VCRs don't break down that easily...
Seriously now... let us not over react about lead.... It's very harmful indeed but... Really don't think that that IC can have that much....
A car passing by burning leaded fuel is more possible to let you inhale more lead that you ever gonna have by touching that IC....
And even with unleaded fuels we can't be dead serious that they don't contain no lead at all... One car wouldn't be harm, but how many cars does a busy street gets???
It's also more than possible that we get lead by tap water...
It's pretty basic in fact... You get to solder something then go wash your hands.. becoming a health freak doesn't help a lot.... Surely health is a top concern but let us just not over react....

Someone needs to create a new topic just for all the RoHS nonsense ;D

True for normal VCRs, mine was part of one of those VCR-DVD combination things.
Yes you can still buy them where I am!
The DVD part doesn't work, but since the VCR part has goodies...
...you can guess Mr. Screw-Driver was happy...
-
Hehe... RoHS is a huge topic... another time...
Mr. Screwdriver.... hahaha... nice one... wait to see mine.... xa0x0a0xa0x0a.....

What about Mr and Mrs Vice Grips...
And Sir Dremel...?
They deserve mention as well ;)
Oh and I nearly forgot, hows Mr. Sledge Hammer ;D
But yes indeed, I've seen massive topics on lead on the forum, but put it this way:
You robot is more likely to kill you than lead!
-
Oh and I nearly forgot, hows Mr. Sledge Hammer ;D
Cue the gratuitous 80's music:
"I want to be your sledgehammer
why don't you call my name!"

I was under the impression than part of the industry adopted lead-free soldering before the legislation, but I might be wrong.

Amen.
RoHS is NOT meant to protect the consumer but to protect the environment and the people in the factory/recycling plant.

Hehe, I just fixed an $500k autonomous robot at work that would have cost >$20k to send it back to the vendor (major brownie points with the boss). The bad chips from the motherboard would make a good keychain; and story.

Drilling the hole is really hard!
Once you hit the semiconductor inside, its tough going :D

Hi,
Drilling the hole is really hard!
Once you hit the semiconductor inside, its tough going :D
I never had any problem, but perhaps it's because last time I made a key hanger was around 15 years ago, so apart from a little of the pin frame, I hit nothing but plastic.
BTW, I usually cut the pins and file the edges lightly, as they will quickly be an ugly tangled mess (and attract whatever is near it).
I used to make earrings of small SMD 14/16 pin chips as well (and small light bulbs and...) - just look in the parts bin for strange looking devices (strange for common people that is).

Should have beat Thinkgeek to the market, would have been rich!

Anything can be made into a piece of "Art"
I'm making a piece of "LED Art"

Looking for something entirely different, I stumbled over this and took a few snaps.

Man that looks GOOD! :o
I'm redoing mine now...

Haha. Hahahahahahaa.
Really? They were THE most unreliable piece of hardware when I was growing up. (born 1987)
My keychain has these:

Well I have the blue one. Girlfriend has the red one :)
