Title: Wanting To Buy $50 Robot MCU
Post by: Andyspins on August 16, 2010, 06:23:07 PM
Hi, I'm interested in buying the microcontroller that you build for the $50 Robot, I've never soldered before, not sure how to build it, and I am a greenhorn. How much will you charge, (if you look on Axon page it says that the $50 Robot mcu is 15, plus shipping and your time)? I'm just interested in the parts that you build in the electronics section of the tutorial, I'll hook up the sensors, servos, batteries, etc. If your interested reply here and e-mail me at [email protected] for shipping details, payment, etc.
Thanks!

The $50 robot is powered by either a an

or an
atmega 328: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9061 (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9061)

The other electronics are just regulating power and stuff like that.

Welcome to SoR!

I understand your apprehension about building something like this when you don't have much experience- however I would advise against buying something pre-built. One of the beautiful things about the $50 dollar robot and its tutorial is that it is geared towards a total beginner. Building it yourself will provide a wealth of education and experience that you can't necessarily read about.

The skills you'll need to employ to build it and the concepts behind *why* you are doing what you are doing are covered in depth on this website. For things like soldering and there are great links to tutorials for such skills. Add to the mix that the $50 dollar robot is one of the most affordable bots to build and its extremely forgiving to mistakes (i.e. if you burn out a part, it will be a cheap fix) and you have a great springboard into the world of hobby robotics.

Finally, if you have any questions while going through the process, the forums will be your best friend. There are literally hundreds of people that have built that robot here, and I'm sure any issue you might run into you can get answers for, because I'm sure someone else has run into the same thing  ;)

All of that being said, if you still want to buy it prebuilt I'm sure someone will accommodate you; but please consider what I have said.

Hi,

Fully understanding how it may look intimidating to a beginner, I still have to second the notion of building the board yourself.

How bad could it go?
Worst case (apart from an encounter between the business end of a soldering iron and little bits of you), you could kill the µcontroller - it's a few bucks.
The gains you'll get from building it yourself... Priceless.

You'll get a better understanding of the entire controller concept and it will help you further on, when you need to build sensors and the like.

Yeah I Guess I'll Just Build It Myself.
